'Homeplug' thingies

Anyone recommend which 'Homeplug' thingies to get, please?

Kids' Xbox upstairs is constantly (and mysteriously) randomly disconnecting from XBL and I don't fancy running Ethernet cables up there, so using the mains wiring in the house seems like a good solution.

Performance and reliability more important than price, cheers.

I'd recommend the Devolo ones. They stay nice and cool, and seem to work well

these are supposed to be good but you do get much more expensive ones, but i dont know how much better/features the more expensive ones provide:

I just bought these and they are tremendous! We live in an old detached house with questionable wiring but I get blistering fast broadband upstairs now, where before I had black spots and drop outs ALL the time over my old 10/100 plugs and Wi-Fi.

I wouldn't go for cheap ones. As they say "you get what you pay for".

Cheaper ones will get hot and might last you a year or so. The devolo ones seems well built and as I have said before the important thing is they stay cool

I had several cheaper models (including Solwise AV-500 ones) fail on me over a few years, and in the end gave up on them and went for an external cat5e network cable to get to the room I needed to.

(and they may well not be the cheapest)

You will of course have to get it delivered so if you live near a Maplin then it may not be such a saving. But for someone like me that has to get everything apart from the odd ice-cream delivered via the internet, just thought I'd mention it...

Well, fellas, I took your advice and bought the Devolo 1200 Powerline starter kit and a wi-fi thingy to go with it.

Not cheap, but very easy to set up and they look and feel like very high quality units.

Setup was a breeze, and I've installed the plug that came with the starter kit in the kids bedroom for their Xbox.

Works great, but unfortunately their XBL still keeps disconnecting. This has happened previously with an official Xbox wi-fi adaptor and again with a Netgear wi-fi extender. Happened with their previous Xbox console, too. I'll test it with a long Ethernet cable directly to the router when I can get my hands on one, and if it still disconnects it has to be a problem with the kids' XBL account, surely? My Xbox downstairs never disconnects from XBL. I'm offering a crate of beer to anyone who can help me fix this once and for all!

The Wi-fi plug has been set up to clone my existing wi-fi and I've plugged that into the end wall of the conservatory. All I can say about this is, WOW! I now have a very strong wi-fi signal all around the other side of the house and across the whole of the back garden. Worth every penny!
