Hi guys, I figured you might be interested in this.

These are on sale with Zavvi currently for £25 so I picked one up the other day. It's not showing now but there is also a code that I used (merch20) which meant that I only ended up paying £21 delivered.

Quick first impressions....

Pros:

+ Very, very responsive controls. I don't want to say completely lag-free but I personally didn't notice any lag when using HDMI and I'm usually pretty sensitive to that stuff. YMMV though.

+ The pad that comes with it feels GREAT, plus you can also use original NES pads.

+ Plays PAL and NTSC cartridges.

+ It looks pretty nice, it's certainly not tacky or cheap looking.

Cons:

- The colours are a little off. I popped in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Glass Joe looked as though he'd spent too long on a sunbed, whilst Little Mac was the opposite, he looked like Casper the Ghost.

- The sound is also a little off, I can't put my finger on it but it just doesn't quite sound like it should.

- No visual options other than a 16:9/4:3 switch. There is a slight smoothing effect to make things look better in HD but frankly I'd rather they left this off. Also, no option to have any kind of scanlines filter.

Other notes:

* The pin connectors are *tight* which appears to be a thing with other Retron consoles too. However this video shows you how to deal with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMdaiyU_b9s

* Whilst it seems to have a high compatibility rate, odd games here and there seem to have problems such as WWF Wrestlemania Challenge which you can see here: https://youtu.be/Hwuz5fYxYqc?t=522 Saying that, I remember that this game struggled on emulators for years, so maybe it's just an anomaly.

* Apparently it's a 'NES on a chip' which to me doesn't make clear if it's emulation or not, but people I've seen around the net seem to say it's not emulation.

All in all, considering I've not had long with it I'd currently give it a 6.5/10 overall but a 9/10 for value. £25 to play NES carts quickly and easily on modern TVs is great and I wholeheartedly recommend this to most folk who want some simple retro gaming with real carts rather than using ROMs and emulators. However, the true connoisseurs out there will probably stick with what they likely already have. For me this will bridge the gap until I go for a higher end option like the Analogue NT mini.

Thanks, even with those issues that does seem like a good deal, and the NES is one of the few consoles I can't play via my OSSC. Tempted, but I don't really have a very big NES collection TBH. I was more of a Master System guy (and that does work via the OSSC).
