Ideas for accompanying/replacing a Sega NNC

Hi all!

Had my Sega NNC for a while, it's in pretty good shape, couple scratches on the side posts from the previous owner and the monitor needs adjusting maybe caps replaced and a new flyback. But it's charming, I love it, played a ton of street fighter on it and have just started introducing it to other boards!

But it's the only cabinet I've ever owned (aside from a flatpack I shove a PC in) and I've been thinking about other cabs recently, either to accompany or replace the NNC and I wondered what kinda cabs you all like/recommend.

I love the bright colours and non game-specific nature of candy cabs, and they tend to have 6-button panels, and much prefer sit down cabinets. But I'm only really familiar with the NNC, and the Astro and Versus City cabs from playing street fighter for years. So I'd love to hear what cabs you guys enjoy, and would recommend for someone who frequently swaps boards, enjoys a variety of games, neogeo, cps2, 80s jamma boards, etc.

Only downside to the NNC is it's kinda bulky, like, this thing is HUGE for apartment living!

Well yes that is huge :p

I actually saw that one earlier, I have good memories of playing Alpha 3 on a huge boy like that, but 1400 quid is a bit insane and I don't actually think it would be possible to get it in my flat at all haha!

Dino king conversion or capcom mini cute?

Both well sized for an apartment, and with a similar colour scheme would look nice next to a new net city.

Oooh the Mini Cute looks awesome, never seen that one before.

How does the screen look behind that plexi/glass cover? Looks really nice though, especially if there is a 1-player panel for them.

Any idea how much they go for?

Oh the Dino King looks pretty cool too, I like the shape of it, without the marquee at leas (blasphemous maybe) How much do they go for these days?

I have a NNC, 2 new astros and a Vewlix

the new astro citys are about the same size as the NNC when it comes to space taken up

but I think I prefer the NAC;s over all.

The Vewlix is nice for modern games and ones designed for it but older games really need a nice CRT

most of the smaller sized candy cabs are very expensive now, so other than a modded dinosaur king, you might be looking at a Sega aero city cab they have smaller crts so save a bit of space.

Ooh I like that little dino king without the orange, and with the r-type marquee. Nice little thing. I do like the New Astro City look too, though. Sega Aero City is a little angular for me I think.

I wonder why the smaller cabs are more expensive? Less of them imported/more easily broken? More compact so more desirable?

What sort of prices do you guys think Dino Kings and Astro/Blast City go for nowadays? These lovely machines have me tempted to start planning my 2nd real cabinet purchase. Doesn't so much have to be smaller than an NNC, although if it doesn't come apart it could do with being a little smaller. But I'd maybe think about selling the NNC to swap it for 2 of the astro/blast/dino/similar. I'll think on it.

Great ideas guys thanks!

never visited london much but i've played 3rd Strike on a ton of VS City/Astro/Blast cabs. It's a good game.

Out of interest, I wonder why your NNC coin door is rectangular and mine has rounded edges.

The Cute used to be just a couple of hundred more than a minty Egret-II, I've owned a couple and they're a pain in the arse.

1) the monitor is a funny size 18" with a short neck - so there's sod all chance of replacing a knackered one.

2) The control panel height wasn't right for me and the control panel is too cramped.

3) they're designed for kids - it's far too small for a middle-aged bloke.

4) they command stupid money these days, seriously not good value for money.

As for the dino conversions - I sold some for about £500 each, fully converted - if you want a small cab then you can't beat then for value for money but they still suffer from points 2 & 3 for the cute and they're only 15Khz.

The problem with having an NNC is you have a 29" tri-sync monitor if you get a smaller cab then it'll probably have a 15Khz or 15/24Khz monitor in so you'll lose VGA.

If you have space I'd get a second NNC and have the screen TATE (Vertical) it'd be the most cost effective option and a pair of matching cabs seems to make them look smaller.

If you need to downsize and don't need 31Khz/VGA then a pair of Aero city's will take up a little less room and give to 25" 15/24 screens for a reasonable cost (A pair of Pony's would be nicer but they've almost tripled in price over the last few years). Any cabs with a 29" screen is going to take up roughly the same space as the NNC.

I'd also throw in a Vewlix Orange/Black as an option but they're only suitable for PC/Console/high-resolution PCB's and they're the same width/height as the NNC but not as deep or heavy.

Honestly, losing VGA just isn't that big a deal for me.

I bought the thing solely for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Third Strike when I played those competitively quite a while ago, off a friend who was getting rid of it. He (or whoever he bought it off) had already gutted the Naomi (if it came with one, I don't know if they do or whatever) and the only board inside it for close to 10 years was Third Strike.

My own collection probably won't ever include a Naomi or Naomi 2 frankly, there just isn't much on Naomi I want that I can't already get from Dreamcast. I know you can put a Dreamcast or Xbox 360 inside it, I've just never done so and don't think I ever will.

With the possible exception of Lightgun games, but that's a whole other headache that wouldn't be worth it, swapping the front panel every time or getting a second NNC just for HoTD2/Condifential Mission, and if I was going to get any light gun game it would be Time Crisis 1 or HotD 1 dedicated cabinet anyway, rather than HoTD2 or Confidential Mission.

I don't necessarily need to downsize, I've just never really thought about other cabs before and starting to think about the next one, replacement is just a possibility rather than a necessity.

I'm less interested in stuff like a Viewlix (and amazingly gorgeous as they are) because I already have a pretty nice dedicated PC setup and TE fight sticks. As nice as they are, I'm into arcades for the 4:3 CRT goodness.

Tate is something I'd consider, I don't play a lot of Tate games, though, but it is something I've been considering more of lately. I only own 2 Tate PCBs right now though, and 1 of them is a copy of Strikers 1945 busted (possibly beyond repair) i took a 20 quid gamble on.

Actually now I think about it, I'd get serious usage out of a smaller Time Crisis cabinet (not the huge rear projection one). They didn't seem too insanely expensive like a decade ago, I bet that's different now though... TC and HotD are games I literally travel miles to play when I get the urge.

I'm rambling a bit now, like I said, mainly just seen what sort of options are available, and that info on the short tubes and the cramped height on the cute cabs/dinos is really good info, exactly what I need. I appreciate it!

How much does an NNC go for about now? I'd be ok with either a Toshiba or a Weiya as the one I have now is Weiya and even with the slight crushing on 15khz and a minor horizontal wobble I've loved it. I got mine for a flat 1k, including Europe Super SF 2 Turbo, marquee, 2 viewlix style stools, and delivery/reconstruction from the owner almost 3 years ago now. And some other bits and pieces I never used, like USB Xbox 360 decoder, and some tools and whatnot. Not even sure if I got a good/bad deal, he was a mate and needed the cash to help move abroad.

Sorry for rapid firing all the questions, like I said owned a cab for a while but never looked into the collecting scene beyond owning a couple CPS2 boards.

That was a great price. A ropey NNC would probably set you back £1k on its own these days

The Dino/Mushi Kings come in white, orange, pink and green iirc. I’m waiting on artwork coming from Muddy

Sure was, known as Scaffa in 3S circles.

Aha, yeah! We spent half a day and multiple trips disassembling, transporting and rebuilding that between houses. Nice to see it's still being used!

Ha! Nice one!

Similar story here, disassembled, loaded onto a truck, he drove it up and we lugged it up a flight of stairs piece by piece and he helped me assemble it again, think he was here until like 1am, top lad is Scaffa.

Gets used pretty much daily at the moment, with working from home and all, although the bottom enclosure I could do with tidying up the wiring a bit now that I'm swapping boards in and out more often.

Lovely machine. It's just one monitor adjustment away from being perfection, I'm just too scared to poke around inside it!
