Okay, bit weird, but some of you probably love dicking about with APIs. I saw this reviewed by Techmoan on YouTube the other day: TRMNL

It's like a photo frame, with one of those black and white, low power, Kindle screens. It has a wireless interface and several pre-configured "app" like things. For example, you can have it display the weather and your Outlook calendar. The whole thing is open source, even the firmware. You need to pony up a one-time fee of £15 for the "developer edition" if you want to do anything out of the ordinary.

Check it out. I'd be interested to hear what use cases you envision.

I literally had one arrive start of this week, not had time to have a proper play, but I rolled out 'joan' tablets in work and fancied something to filter the noise on my desk.

I've been wanting to build something similar, with an eink screen for ages but the price of the screens has put me off.

I picked up a clear one, which, to be fair still feels steep for what it is, but I couldn't put anything the same together myself for the same money 🤷‍♂️

I've ran a magic mirror for years which has been great, but this is specifically for my desk, to roll things like the info I fail to check properly most of the time (calendar, meetings etc.) because I'm rubbish and busy!

Edit - Know someone has also already reverse engineered the firmware too, regardless, the project have commited to making the code base fully open source if it's not commercially viable to keep running.

quite a few interesting indiegogo campaigns for 75hz e-ink displays.

example of a color e-ink frame
another..

i have a "bigme" brand color e-ink reader recently acquired. It runs android, so you can replace the default software with an open source e-book reader to support multiple formats.

It does video.. and web browsing tolerably.. the colors are fairly washed out, but nice to have for some illustrations etc.
