Another improvement.

Could have been so much better but I managed to lose 5 lives on one round!
Lost my last life through greed, went for a few extra points instead of exiting the round...

Apparently, Doraemon on PC Engine is based on this game. Doraemon is a nice pick-up-and-play game, so I will have to try this one, next time I fire up the MAME cab.

I've just had a look at a video and I wouldn't say it was based on KNHHD, I would say it is more of a sequel.

EDIT: I have just had a go and it is quite a bit easier than KNHHD (didn't stop me repeatedly falling in holes, though) but there are two things that are missing for some reason.
You don't get 1,000 pts if you walk over a trapped enemy and enemies can walk through the exit door when open.
This means your score can be quite a bit lower and you can't simply stand one side of the exit and keep killing until your time runs out.
It took some getting used to as the levels are completely different, at least you keep getting extra lives as KNHHD only gives you 6.

Anyway here is a grab of me having exited the boss screen. (Not much there but I was busy up to that point.)
Apparently, there are 60 rounds and you have a boss at 30 & 60. This was 30.

EDIT2: I made a save state when I realised the game didn't finish after the boss and played from round 31 today and completed it.
This is the first time I have played it.
As I stated, it is too easy as you can readily replenish your lives when you get a good round.

Grabbed the screenshot a bit too soon as the boss hadn't finished dying and so my score is actually 100K higher than shown.

EDIT3: I have just played Cratermaze on the "normal" setting....
Image is after completing round 60.

Sweet. Nice going on Doraemon, too. It's probably easier to make it friendlier to young players that were fans of the cartoon.

Having now checked out Cratermaze (the US version without Doraemon but with an English menu) it turns out I was playing the "difficult" setting.
As I do not read Japanese, I thought the "normal" setting was something like a beginner mode and the "difficult" setting was normal.
When I first checked it out I chose the top option and as there were only two enemies and you could not fall in your holes it just didn't seem right.
I quit and selected the second option which is much closer to KNHHD and so assumed it was the one to play.

I got to the boss on round 32 and, as I died on 31 and had no speed, I managed to pick up one chest before being completely overwhelmed by enemies.

I didn't know about the US version. Watched a bit of a video of it and prefer Doraemon, as I like the Japanese aesthetic of PC Engine games.

I use my phone camera and Google Translate app to read the Japanese text. I use it to read the manuals, too. Does a pretty good job.
