Konami Scramble

I'm working on my Konami Scramble disassembly @ seanriddle.com/scramble.asm

One thing I've noticed in MAME is that to get credit, I can press Coin 1 once or Coin 2 multiple times.

Why is it that I need to insert more coins into Coin 2 than I do for Coin 1 (up to 4:1 depending on Dip settings) ?

Can anyone explain? Did Coin 2 accept only coins of smaller denominations in certain countries like the US?

I've looked at the manual and no mention is made of the coin slots being treated differently.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Hi Murray, thanks for replying.

Its not the MAME driver, I see it in the code. And I'm confused

Here's the MAME dip switch settings for Scramble (Konami).

Coinage A 1/4 B 4/1 C 1/4

Coinage A 1/2 B 1/1 C 1/2

Coinage A 1/1 B 2/1 C 1/1

I wondered what B and C were for, now it appears that you can vary the amount of credit given by coin slot.

For example, I understand the first entry in the table above to mean:

1 coin (in slot A, AKA Coin 1) = 4 credits

4 coins (in slot B, AKA Coin 2) = just 1 credit

1 coin (in slot C) = 4 credits

I guess if you wanted P2's coin to be worth as many credits as P1's coin you'd use:

Coinage A 1/2 B 1/1 C 1/2 - not verified this yet though.

I don't understand why this is so. Why would you treat coins in different slots differently? The Konami manual doesn't mention this. If anyone has a manual that refers to this, can they post a link here? I can only find the short Konami one.

And why would you have a 3rd coin slot? (slot C) ? Cocktail?

Because of coin slots used for different coins. eg it was quite common to have a 10p slot and a 50p slot. Obviously inserting 50p coin would give you more credits than a 10p coin.

I know the electronic coin mechs that would accept multiple coins became commonplace in the UK, but that wouldn't have always been the case (& not sure if they ever used those in the US / Japan etc?).

Not sure why 3 coin slots though!

OK, I've found out what they are - this might be useful for people trying to understand the dip switches:

A is Slot 1

B is Slot 2

C is the SERVICE SWITCH

I do not know why you can have coins in one slot worth more than the others. That I'd like to know.

Ah, makes sense. I have a game that you can credit with service switch, didn't think there might be an option for how many credits.

See my reply above.

Ah - so it is for different denominations! Thanks for clearing that up, I honestly could not remember.

I suppose back in 1981 the tech would be quite primitive so would need different slots to handle different coins.

Yeah, I used to have a cocktail of that era which had a 10p and 50p slot, and have seen it on some uprights too.
