Mame cab gone for a Tosh

How gutted am I?

After 2 years (on and off) rebuilding my Mame cab I finally powered it on today.

Everything seemed perfect.

My old 25" Tosh TV powered straight into S-VID and up came the raster.

The electric auto screen rotate worked a charm, and the push button degaus 'dinged' with a satisfying shimmering rainbow.

I powered up the new PC with an LCD monitor connected and checked the inputs from the JPAC (an old PS2 type connected through an USB converter), the APAC and the OPTIPAC and everything worked.

Then I tried to set up the Tosh using the NVIDIA settings for multiple displays. And I blew it. Literally.

I had it set to M/PAL (which it kept defaulting to after setting UK defaults) with a refresh of 25HZ which was greyed out so unchangeable.

I plugged in the S-VID cable and promptly blew the frame O/P chip. What a BUMMER!

Don't do LCD!

Does the TV have a Scart input? That is much better than S-video, if it does...

If you can't get it working maybe get a smaller TV like 21"? They are easier to find I would think.

I assume the nvidia card is outputting the Svideo to the TV

as mentioned, get an ATI card with the Atom15 firmware flashed to it

and use a vga to rgb scart lead and you'll get a much nicer picture.

Hi Chaps.

You're correct. The JPAC is only being used an an IPAC. I've used it on this rig for 6 yrs. And I used the Tosh for 6 yrs via S-VID, albeit on a low end ATI AGP, but my new mobo for my rebuild has PCI-E so the only card I had with S-VID was an Nvidia. It initially gave a b/w pic, but a bit smaller than it should be. I messed with some settings in the nvidia control panel and for a few minutes I had a great pic.... but still a bit small. I lose track of what I did next but next thing I knew the frame was good for the lower half and cramped down to about 1 inch for the top half. Maybe I selected NTSC or one of the other settings. I'm really not sure now. But I'm hoping the frame chip was just ready to fail after being booted for the 1st time in 2 years. Got new chips on the way (only £4 each) so fingers crossed.

I must say the I've always been more than happy with the pic. To me it's always been perfect.

I really don't want to shrink from the 25" CRT as the whole rotating mech was custom made around it, including enlarging the top half of the cab! To admit defeat now would kill me. Watching the big screen rotate with one touch of a button is a pure joy to behold.

The TV is a Tosh 2552DB. It's got 2 scarts. Not sure if it'll do RGB. But would be nice to go that route. May be a little too adventurous for me though.

Another thing I overlooked is that the new mobo doesn't have a PS2 connector for the old JPAC. Fortunately I found a USB converter and was amazed when it worked.

I 'may' but some pics up when/if its finally done, including a vid of the rotate, but I know I'll get crucified for butchering a Xenon.

I'm actually just on my way out for a socially distanced trip to my sister's house to pick up a 26" LCD!!!!!!! (it's been scrubbed and it's been left out behind the wheelie bins.... probably where it belongs). I hope I don't need it.

The picture quality difference moving from svideo to rgb scart will be noticeable, well worth your time to look into that

i did the same
xbox 360 res to high...

i ran 1080 on a pfx shanghai novel
for about 25 seconds... then i blew

i have changed the hot twice...
hot blows instantly now...
so learned the hard way always check
you resolutions before powering on...

they just can’t take it..
now i’m looking for a sanwa k0w6060 chassis

That's it. Decision made.... It's getting LCD'd!!!!!!!!

Only joking. Just done a deal on a 28" CRT. Won't fit in with the auto rotate so will be permanent horizontal.

Hopefully the chip will arrive tomorrow and fix the Tosh but if it doesn't this will take it's place.

At least I'll have a back up for the future (which I hope I'll never need!)

Picked up the 28" Sanyo today. Fantastic deal. It's brand new old stock. At the very least it's a spare for the future to make sure I'll have a CRT till the day I curl up my toes.

And the best news.... The Tosh LIVES!!!!

And it wasn't me that blew it up. I put the new frame chip in it today and it made no difference. So I set about hitting all the electrolytics in the frame stage with the tip of an iron and when I hit a little 1uf 50V the frame went haywire. In went a new cap and the Tosh is back to it's former glory.

I'm now officially as happy as Larry!

Yup... that's the main reason for wanting to get the Tosh working. If I went with the 28 there would be no rotate and I put so much work into that.

I will put a vid on in the next few days... just need to work out how!
