So over the past few years i have become a massive Metroidvania fan, well, i like some of them, others a i find a bit meh to play with too much randomness in them.

I absolutely loved Hollow Knight and Ori and the Will of the Wisp, just 2 amazing games with a level of difficulty i appreaciate

I also love the first Metroid game, and also the first one on the GBA

For some reason i just didnt gel with Super Metroid, which seems to be one of the most popular, i probably need to go back to it at some point

I' currently playing a cracking one called Islets, the difficulty isnt anywhere near what normal Metroidvanias are and i'm finding it very relaxing to play, i also didnt like Axiom Verge at all, i really dont get it with that one

I think next up will be the new Prince of Persia game after Islets, but let me know if you have any you would recommend if you are a fan

This is one of my favourites if not my most favourite genre ❤️

Disclaimer: I wouldn't say all of the below are true metroidvanias as some of them are slightly more linear with metroidvania elements but if you enjoy the genre then I think you'll like them. Also, a lot of the games below are cross platform, I just picked the first video I could find. I've played all of the below on either PC or Switch.

Hollow Knight was fantastic, really looking forward to Silksong... if it ever gets released.

Another vote for Axiom Verge, I really enjoyed that but I struggled to get into the sequal.

You mentioned Ori and the Will of the Wisp, Have you played the first one - Ori and the Blind Forest? That is fantastic too.

Alwa's Awakening is a great 8-bit'esque metroidvania:

Alwa's Legacy was decent too:

Animal Well is all kinds of awesome:

Both SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2 are great, I've played through both of these multiple times:

The Touryst is probably the least like a true metroidvania but it is a fantastic game

Yoku's Island Express - Pinball metroidvania... sounds weird but it's really good!

One can't forget Cave Story too:

One of the games I've enjoyed the most recently is Minishoot' Adventures. It't more of a metroid/zelda/twin stick shooter mash up but it's awesome.

I'm all up for suggestions of other good games. One I'm thinking of trying soon is Turbo Kid:

Let me know if anyone else has any other suggestions.

Axiom Verge is phenomenal

The sequel less so, but it's decent
Yup, the sequel isn't so much bad, more a case of much smaller than the first one.

Must plays, Castlevania Symphony of the night (PS1) and it's unofficial sequel Bloodstained Ritual of the night (don't accept the 1st endings on either of them (or even the 2nd :D )).

Iconoclasts and The mummy demake in the shooter class.

Owlboy and Animal Well, oh also Carrion.

Lone Fungus is somewhat like Hollow Knight in that you kinda don't have an order in which to play through the game.

The list goes really on these days, so many great ones!

@kingtreelo Have you played it yourself? It's not a true 2D 'maze' metroidvania (hence the disclaimer and the description) but there are a lot of metroidvania elements to it.

@ZedEx48K - Thanks for the The Mummy Demaster reminder, I saw that a while back and thought it looked fun but then forgot about it. I've played Iconoclats and Owlboy, they're good too.

Carrion looks completely fucked up, im in! 😄 Lone Fungus looks fun too. I've just bought Carrion on its own and then Lone Fungus in a bundle along with Haiku the Robot. I'll let you know what I think to the latter.

I've put a few hours into this over the weekend:

So far it's nothing ground-breaking but very much enjoyable. It's currently on sale with 80% off (£3.09) until about 6pm tonight.

My brother saved up his papper round monies back when super metroid big box was released ..
It was on the back wall behind the till….

And we wanted it !
Failure we got the £90 or £120 what ever it was back then that was a massive proce for a game. We bought it …
Plugged it in played it and it was to mature and advanced for us. We didnt get it.

If only we had perservered.
To many quick gratificación games at hand.
Super punch out
Mario kart
Super starwars etc..
It just stayed on shelf until it got traded…

Metroid prime i completed and thought it has great.

I have metroid pinball and rumble cart too .
Also great .

first person shmups is a crowded space .
But metroid stands apart -
Because of its Awsome style.&
Lovely Alien worlds

Iv never forgot a friend when i was maybe 10.. hé was like 16 hé had alíens spectrum.

A corridor crawler.
Hé drew the map as hé played it,
Thats what super metroid needed but we were not ready for that amount of dedication,

We just thought about platformers run and gun etc ..
Never had played a dungen crawler.

Don't sweat not gelling with Super Metroid while it’s a classic, the controls can feel a bit floaty if you’re used to the crispness of Hollow Knight. Since you’re enjoying the chill vibes of Islets, you’re going to love the new Prince of Persia because the movement is incredibly snappy and satisfying. If you want something that matches that Hollow Knight level of polish and challenge later on, I’d highly recommend checking out Nine Sols. It’s also totally valid to bounce off Axiom Verge; that weird, cryptic atmosphere definitely isn't for everyone.

thought the PoP game was awful, i probably need to go back to it but after 30 minutes or so it was rubbish, just cinematic stuff with some old school god of war gameplay thrown in from PSP times
