How do you make the normal fellas stop when chasing you? Do you have to wait u til they are close then stop momentarily?

I’m plateauing around l20 and can’t seem to break through.
Imagine that there's an invisible "grid".
Each square on this grid is the size of an apple, or a cherry.
Practice digging to eat a cherry, get as far over the cherry as possible without eating it.
That's how far into each square on the grid you need to be to get a chasing red guy to transform into a digger.
Also have to be touching some soil, even a thin slice is enough.

Practice on scene 1, getting as far over a cherry as possible then stopping and see if the red guys transform.
That's how Dazzer explained it to me ages ago.
Let me know how you get on.

I had a very quick go the other night.

I think I know what’s gonna on and find it easier to do it when running up or down and just briefly jumping into a horizontal plane to make them dig.

Do they have to be close to change when running horizontally and do you have to stop then keep going or can you just stop until they change?

They have to be right on your arse to transform. almost touching.
For years I didn't know about the "grid", and just did a stop-start run. Waiting until they were right on me before moving.
The skill is most useful for when things get really tight and being able to stop when being seriously chased takes practice.

It's a very different game to Dig Dug, although they look similar.
They both involve digging tunnels and dropping things on enemies, but there's a lot more tactics and ways to get in/out of trouble in Mr Do!
Dig Dug uses a short range weapon and cannot move the rocks horizontally. Very different with Do!
And, I think it's "Doo" rather than "Doh", but a Japanese pronunciation might be totally different.

Got another 1.3 million last night. I think my brain gets tired after about an hour of playing.

Have a watch of Dazzer absolutely owning the game. True mastery

At the end of lv1 he stops just under the apple before the monster approaches and waits for him to turn. It’s ok then to stop and wait for them rather than run and stop?

Look how far Dazzer is into to the "grid" square that's under that last apple. You could just wait in that position for a red guy to come to you. And they would transform.
Plus on levels 1 - 3 the monsters aren't that clever and not very aggressive. These are ideal to practice your positioning as you have plenty of time to react.
Once you're past scene 10, the monsters get a lot more aggressive. The routes they take to get to you are much more direct. And that makes them more predictable and steerable into traps.
On the 1st few levels the red guys just sort of bumble around, sometimes aimlessly. Later on, they get after you with a purpose.
If you die on the 1st levels, it's almost always your fault as you can take quite a few risks and get away with a lot without dying.

Had a go last night 816,000. Wanted a million but it didn't go to plan :)
I'm going to blame the video capture introducing a frame or two of lag occasionally.
But, it's probably just old eyes and old brain :)

Got some homework for anyone that's wanting to up their scores.
Have a watch of this guy - MP - no idea who it is, but they are really good.
Uses different tactics and routes to the previous Dazzer video I posted.
Pay special attention to how they do the 10's, I'd have never tried going that way.
Lots to learn and, some incredible escapes.
Video might only work if you watch on youtube, well worth a watch.

Game On!

Most Do! players know how to set up an offset apple trap to kill the blue munchers chasing you.
And how to nip out the soil so an apple drops into an offset to kill everything underneath as it falls.
I've been doing that for years.
The video from - MP - shows something new to me. Something I've never seen anyone do before.

How about setting up an apple trap WITH NO APPLE ?
How the hell is that done?
Is that even possible?

Watch the video and pay attention to scenes 12 and 32.
Luckily for us, - MP - shows how it's done twice.
This new tactic needs more study as it's definitely something to have in your skillset.
I'm going to practice it myself, it's really great to find something new after so many years playing.

Like the double back jump on the top level of barrels on Donkey Kong, this tactic can squeeze more points out each scene.
And allow you to go on the attack even if you haven't got an apple available.
Hoping to see more players try this out.

Let me know what you think, has anyone else ever seen this before?

Anyone been playing Mr. Do! lately?
I've just moved house and am itching for a go, I haven't played in weeks.
C'mon guys, post a big score for me to chase.

Who's playing, and what sort of scores are you getting?

Anyone playing Mr Do! ???

I've been playing 1 man games, to keep them relatively short.
Had a nice run yesterday, 240k on 1st man.

Post some scores, lets blow the dust off this old thread!

Cheers.

I’ve just rotated my monitor back round to get going again. I’m just getting 340k- 360k each time. I tend to have a few bad screens in the early 20s and lose focus.

I forget to use the grid trick too, I need to use it more.

I am getting slower as I’m getting older too. It’s like I improve a bit then a bit of me says ‘no you don’t old boy’ and gives up.

I’m waiting for an operation to relieve carpel tunnel in my elbow and neck which might give me a few ms back!

Technique will get you more points than raw speed and reactions.
Don't need to rush around if you know how to stop. And you know how to manage the grid.
500k coming soon!
