On level 3 I saw what I call monster dragging where Do! Gets the monsters to stop chasing and almost be controlled by his steps - normally I get caught on when I have to turn.

I call that "dragging" the "grid trick". You can position yourself within the invisible grid in such a way as to make the chasers stop and transform. You have to be between 2 of the invisible "grid" squares and touching at least a few pixels of soil. then when a monster approaches you, its logic thinks it has to dig to get into your square so it stops and transforms. The real pro's can do this on demand. It comes in very handy for getting out of tight spots.

And you are correct - the monsters are being controlled. Every movement of the joystick will influence the monsters actions. This becomes much more obvious on higher levels as you can steer the monsters into traps very easily.

Hey Kewdeyee, thanks for the info, i've been following yours and Dazzers channel now for a bit, I also found a Universal Arcade Games group on facebook which i joined and it took me to a tutorial vid of yours on Twitch - best hour and a half i've spent on a Saturday afternoon in a while.

It was so much help to hear a voice talking about what was going on instead of just watching - there's always theory behind the action and what makes a decision is important.

Robbie Lakeman did a stand-up demo at Funspot a year or two back which I think John Jacobsen was talking to him at the time - totaly riveting for a game fan who's not already a zillion point player.

Keep on it, you'll be at 10 mil next !

Thanks RGP, thats nice of you to say that.

I find that video really helped me improve my game. Glad that my tutorials helped out a bit.

Strange that you found the Twitch link on Facebook, I'm not on facebook, never have been.

...

Then Dazzer came on the Twitch scene, destroying score after score and making it all look so easy.

Now I just try to be like him

Just had a quick game tonight, forgot to snapshot the score table but 133,400 at scene 11 free-handing after take a few tips from your video. I've had one-off bigger scores but with no structure and pure panic play.

I had 3 lives in the bag entering scene 11 and was completely caught off guard at how more aggressive the enemies get as its been a while since i've been there.

What i've learned is first three screens are designed to be fairly easy, 6 enemies on the first 2 and then it jumps to 10 (I think that's the right count). Scene 4 is where I always used to lose it so my aim was always to have 1 extra life by scene 4.

Successive repetitive play though for a newbie doesn't make perfect, it leads to frustration so I thought i'd play some DK after that for a bit.

I'm only using my keyboard at the moment but i'm working out which cab I can take home and make more permanent as everything's mostly out on the road all year.

Nice one James, 133k is a decent score.

You are already a better player than me on keyboard, I just cannot play Mr Do! on anything except a real joystick. I've tried keyboard, joypads, etc. All hopeless. Got to have the real controls or I just can't get anywhere. Anything else just doesn't feel right.

I don't know if you've already seen this, but my 2nd "Tips" video is a bit better than my 1st, at least I am a bit better at explaining what I do and why. It is quite hard to play and comment live https://www.twitch.tv/kewydee_17/v/19694237

The first few scenes are very easy to allow new players to experiment with movement and tactics. Then it starts to ramp up a bit. 6 monsters on 1 and 2, then it goes up to 8 monsters, not 10, but sometimes it feels like 100's

The grief you have been getting on scene 4 is mostly to do with the shape of the scene. It is by far the most difficult shape in the whole game. For scenes 4 and 14 it is possible to reach the top-left highest apple from the start if it is available. Get into the tunnel on 4 asap as Mr Do! runs faster through an open tunnel than he can dig. Example: https://www.twitch.tv/kewydee_17/v/19694237?t=05m17s

Here is another example with a non-ideal apple positions on a 4 and how to deal with it https://www.twitch.tv/kewydee_17/v/19694237?t=15m36s

Hope this helps you to up your scores.

One day, I would love to come up north and have a day of Do! I reckon after a few hours playing you will be able to get to scene 10 on your 1st man with at least 3 extra's stacked up for when it gets lively.

I have to visit Arcade Club, I HAVE TO. It looks so good, just wish I lived a bit closer.

Good luck with your gaming, practice on scene 1 with apple positioning as you can pretty much get away with any mistakes on the 1st scene. Always approach an apple so that the monsters come at you vertically. If you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.

Onwards!

Decided to record a session tonight, I did better at 154k but it didn't record then I couldn't get on a decent run again.

Here's some video to have a laugh at, I keep running up against frustration with the grid like turning right and Mr Do still going upwards because he has to complete the step to the next grid cell - and the apples not going where I need them to as well.

Not a bad score James. Do you have a twitch or are you streaming to YT?

Gives us a link and I'll add it to the streaming members page http://www.ukvac.com/forum/members-streaming-games-channels-upd-220616_topic341480.html

I do have a twitch account but I can't get the config right, I asked this question about setup a couple of days ago:

http://www.ukvac.com/forum/streaming-setup-for-mame-with-twitch_topic353380.html

Everything leeds to a jittery experience playing the game while streaming, not like my macbook hasn't got the grunt, OBS shows less than 30% CPU usage overall.

Twitch username is retrogamesparty

I had to capture the input then play it back to make an avi then use ffmpeg to convert to mp4 to upload to YT - bit convoluted.

Have you tried setting up a webcam pointing at the macbook screen James, it won't have the same overhead as capturing the frame buffer. I've got an i7 laptop and that jitters when capturing screen grabs when I'm making tutorials. The free version of XSplit broadcaster is pretty good and will stream to YT or twitch.

Don't have much experience with OBS or macbooks unfortunately, so can't really help there.

I was trying to get the same kind of setup that Kewydee and others have rather than the webcam version, I can get a cab out and do that but I remember how teeth gritting it was watching others play over-the-shoulder webcam games with the sync bar rolling constantly.

XSplit isn't available for Mac by the looks of it.

Must be possible.

Nice play James, seeing some good things.

You are probably showing a bit too much "respect" for the monsters on early scenes. The monsters are pretty dumb early on. Play about on early scenes to get more of an idea how the "grid" works.

Practice turning and firing just as you go under an apple, it will really help to be able to turn and fire quickly. Key skill to have in the bag.

Always approach an apple so that the monsters have to come at it from below. Avoid trying to push an apple horizontally for a kill.

Also, I wouldn't dig straight upto and then sit and wait under apples as much. You are pretty much stuck waiting in that position. Its far better to dig upto an apple in a way so that you can push it down a shaft rather than holding it up and waiting for a monster to come.

Keep at it, doing well

Theres a setting in OBS so you can record your output as an mp4 on a local hard drive

Save you a lot of mucking around
