Merry wotsit all,

Andy, that's a very nice piece of kit and looks to be in great condition :)

I've just spent the time eating and lounging around; having managed to
squeeze the T-Mek into the house a few months ago, it's nice to have had the
time to play with it.

Amazing. So it's actually quite useful then?

I haven't bought myself any arcade related presents yet, forgot to bid on
the things I did want, namely a working roadblasters + system 1 boardset
that went for 18 quid and various suspect looking old vector PCBs with
'parts missing'... So now I'm waiting for January when maybe I'll grab a
bargain.

Karl.

Now that is a super Christmas present :) Good luck with the "restoration"!

I don't imagine anyone on UKVAC is going to be able to help much, but do keep us posted!

Cheerio,
Ross

Nice pressy...once upon a time I'd have loved to get my hands on some of
that old test gear, it certainly is fun to play with.

For my Christmas present I've been listening to some more of the TOPcast
interviews with the Williams and Gottlieb folk.
www.marvin3m.com/topcast/

What's nice is that many of the game designers and software engineers love
to talk about the games they produced and tell you all about how they did
it, what the company was doing at the time and how they viewed the
competition.

Out of interest, we're flying Steve Richie (ex-Williams/Atari/Midway/Stern
Designer of games such as The Getaway, Black Knight, Terminator 2, Firepower
and the 2007 game, Spider-Man) over here to the 2009 UK Pinball show.

This year, the show also hosts the 2009 European Pinball Championships,
which will have over 150 competitors. During his Williams times, he had
Larry DeMar and Eugene Jarvis on the software and hardware systems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Ritchie

He'll be giving a presentation and will be around during the whole event to
answer questions. I went to watch the cricket at Lords with him and his
missus last year and some others last year and, whilst it was raining, we
ended up chatting for hours and what happened with the industry. He's a real
nice guy and mine of information.

More info to come here:
http://www.ukpinballshow.co.uk/
NOTE: This year the show is in Northampton, not Kettering!

<brokenrecord> Anyone fancy bringing along some video games and putting on a
tournament? Somehowe we need to kickstart the video game scene...
<brokenrecord>

Happy New Year!

Cheers,
Phil

What isn't quite clear in the pictures is perhaps the two 22pin
universal harnesses that come out of the right hand side of the rig
(connects to the two round connectors).

Atari made all of their games with 22pin connectors, you plug this
22pin harness into the game under test and plug in its corresponding
'program plug'. This 'tells' the test rig how and where to route the
power and inputs and outputs in that 22pin harness. If there is an
additional connector on the game pcb you are hooking up, the program
plug is where the corresponding connector will eb hanging out of.

In this way, all you need is the right set of program plugs for the
game you want to test, as the 22pin harness is always attatched to the
rig.

Atari used this same program plug principle on the later Pat9000
(which i also have) but i believe they are completely different in
function and are not interchangeable.

My rig fell out of use at some point, where it looks like it was
robbed for parts (the universal expansion module is missing) and an
AR1 was hooked up very crudely and it looks like it was used as a
dedicated Asteroids test rig, probably because of the variac
transformers.. Its a total hack job thoguh, the monitor is not vector,
its the original raster, the op had a vector monitor placed on top.

So it's going to take a bit to restore it, but it is a start as they
are so rare.

My main personal collection is themed on Atari from the 1970's. One of
my goals i set myself a looooong time ago was to get hold of one
example of every game that Atari made in the 1970's.. I am very near
to having a complete set (missing only 4-5 pcbs now). The CTF-1 test
rig is perfect for my collection as it is pretty much what you would
have had at the Atari factory if you had a library of every game you
ever made in the 70's :)

Its nice to have an aim for a collection, and i'm pleased to have got
the CTF-1 to sort of round it off :)

enjoy.

Quoting Karl Doe <karlcdoe@yahoo.co.uk>:

> Hmmm, out of interest how many of the games/pcbs have you got round to
> testing/playing/fixing?

I don't actually keep a number on that, but from memory i have
played/fixed/tested:

Computer Space
Computer space 2 player
Rebound
Pursuit
Anti-aircraft
Pin Pong
Pong
Pong Doubles
Quadrapong
Goal IV
Gran Trak 10
Sky Diver
Le Mans
Night Driver
Sprint 2
Sprint One
Sprint 4
Indy 4
Basketball
Baseball
Football
Qwak
Shark Jaws
Breakout
Super Bug
Destroyer
Sky Raider
Steeplechase
Video Pinball

need i go on?

All my games and their approximate statuses are kept logged on my page:

http://www.andysarcade.net/personal/bronzeage/index.htm

In case you were inferring Mr. Doe that I am merely accumulating and
hoarding them away... ;)

I actually repair and trade-in pcbs from people with original machines
that need them more than i do... Ie, if they have a machine with a bad
board and i have a working pcb, i will trade it to them... i've done
that on more than a few occasions!

I realise that i'm just collecting pcbs, but these are actually the
games, they can be played if hooked up properly, whereas owning the
machine itself is a bit harder and consumes way more space :)

I am working with Seth Soffer in Philadelphia on a b/w games museum..
been planning that for donkeys years, in the last year he has bought a
new building and the musuem is finally happening.

so ner :p
