THE ULTMATE CAT-AND-MOUSE GAME!

About The Cab

Mappy is a bit of
an odd one. I never played it back in
the day and the cabinet wasn’t on my radar, but Mappy is now one of my
favourite cabs in my collection.

Mappy was
developed by Namco in 1983 and distributed in the US by Bally / Midway. The cab even has all the original license
stickers from when it was on site at Illinois.

“The player takes
the role of is a police mouse called Mappy.
You must retrieve stolen goods from a mansion of crooked cats, Mewkies
and their cat crime boss Nyamco. Mappy
can use doors, bells, and even microwaves to slow them down. How can Mappy and the cat crime syndicate
move between floors? Why trampolines of
course! The house is full of them.” I would have loved to be at Namco HQ when the
idea was pitched! It sounds a bit crazy,
but the game is great fun and very addictive.

The cab is a bit
of a beast and the design borders slightly on ridiculous, but I absolutely love
it. Just Jr. Pac-Man shares a similar
cabinet design. The artwork is great and
the oversized marquee gives it a really unique look.

I really like the mix of cartoon style and pixel artwork.

The Good

-It’s a US Mappy!

-The cab is in
nice original condition, solid and fully working.

-The monitor is a
Wells-Gardner K4600 and the picture is great.

-I love the
cabinet design, artwork and oversized marquee.

-The glass bezel is
in great condition with very little flaking.

-The cab has nice
side art, and good T-moulding.

-The cab is extremely
clean inside.

-The coin door
paintwork is in good condition.

-It came complete
with keys.

The Not So Good

-The monitor has
some light burn, although this is not visible through the perspex screen cover.

-The back door
lock is missing, and is currently secured by screws.

-There is rust on
the transformer block / fuse holder.

-There are some
small marks from general wear and tear, and some slight wear on the edges of
the side art.

-The marquee and bezel
are a little faded.

-Hey, come on,
this cab is over thirty years old!

-In fact scrap ‘The
Not So Good’, I love it!

Now here is the mystery
part. When I was wheeling the cab into
my games room, I tipped the cab back on the sack barrow and my wife noticed
this artwork on the bottom.

I have read that
Bally / Midway used to recycle cabinet parts.
Can anyone tell me which game this is from?

A massive thanks to Muddymusic (Ukvac) for this awesome cab.

Great looking cab there

I'd never heard of or played Mappy until I got a 60-1 PCB about 5 year ago, great game !

I used to play a game on my ZX Spectrum BITD called Crimebusters by Players, it was a £1.99 budget game, great game but I realised it was based on Mappy when I got the 60-1, only 20 or so years later

That's a really cool cab. Where did you get it?

I'm enjoying the game too, as I've just set it up in my Taito SI cocktail table - one of the relatively small number of games that only needs left, right, and 1 button to play!

It's a great game that I've had on my 60in1 but never really played until it featured on 10p arcade podcast, where I really got to like it immensely. Nice unusual cab too.

I've never played Happy but always admired it when seeing it on US you tubers videos.

The cab looks great in your line up, you have a fantastic selection of cabs! I can't believe how big it looks!

I used to play Mappy all the time in the arcade on the point in Ingoldmells back in the day, pretty sure the cab wasn't anything like as nice as yours, IIRC it was a pretty standard generic cab.

I tried it on a namco multigame in St Ives recently, very diasappointing as its unplayable with the 4 way stick that was fitted.

I hope you enjoy every minute of owning it.

Great looking cab...in wonderful condition.

And you part own (or perhaps more accurately own part of) a Solar Fox to boot... result!

A classic!

Seeing your photos makes me want to do a minature cab in the Mappy shape, but probably without the cereal box marquee shape
smiley2.gif
Still love it though.

So was it licensed to Bally / Midway in the states, but made by Namco in Japan?

The game on the base is Solar Fox.

That's it, mystery solved! I've just been reading up on it and watching some videos. The game looks pretty cool, but wasn't all that popular it seems.

It's great when your still find NEW favourites from old games
smiley1.gif

Rail Chase is one for me, soon as I saw screen shots when the Emulator came out I was like, I want the game

"Now here is the mystery part. When I was wheeling the cab into my games room, I tipped the cab back on the sack barrow and my wife noticed this artwork on the bottom"

I think the Mystery part there is your Wife Noticed

they don't usually show much interest so that's a good sign
smiley1.gif

Yeah they did seem to use any old bits to built cabs, I guess because it was more about the game it self than the cabinet, so not wasting any money or materials

Some pics of the inside Double Dragon with parts of Op Wolf machines for internal brace. gotta say it's the first time I've seen a whole panel though
