New Astro City Cabs

I bought these 2 cabs from Olly, from the big order!

1st I stripped the cabs apart and gave them a good clean. Cleaned up the outside of the cabs as best as i could with magic erazer. Resprayed the yellow speaker shroud and a few touch ups on the major black marks.

Added new coin slot, control panel, buttons and joysticks for both cabs. Wiring was a bit of a mess, so de-soldered all the old connections and crimped all the wires and sorted the wiring out and added 4th button.

Originally locks sourced and fitted to both cabs. New florescent tubes added, although one needs a new starter, but nearly complete. Purchased 2 stools from Olly, re covered the stools and cleaned up legs as best as i could. They have come up nice.

Very nice Craig. I’m in the middle of doing the same thing with the one I bought from Olly. Can I ask what you used for touching up the black marks? I was going to use some VW ral 9002 touch up paint, but was wondering if theres something better.

Hi Nik73,

I used Ral 9002 Grey white Spray Can for the shroud speaker section and then the marks that was large on the cab i lightly sprayed over, building it up in 3 coats. VW Ral 9002 will be just as good. I know from doing a lot of research on the net, a lot in UK have recommend using VW ral 9002 and had good results.

Just out of interest, do you know if ral 9002 good for all Sega candy cabs? I'd like to spray my Naomi monitor surround, not sure what shade to get.

Craig, how are the insides of these Astro's? For gunge/smell. I know Oll said they've just come out of an arcade in Japan where they're still able to smoke etc..
I'm still waiting for Martin to deliver mine

Hi Itruk, the 2 cabs I got had alot of dust and definitely needed a clean. Alot of gunge but a good 20mins clean and it comes up decent. Smell to be honest when I did it I had a cold so can't say, but I don't think so bad, and now I've done it all they don't smell. They've been in a commercial environment, so I guess with any purchase expect a little TLC needed, but once you have done it you will be happy with your cab.

I want to get started but I'm a big wuss and its too cold in the garage at the moment ! Where did you get your cpanels from in the end ?

I bought them off eBay. There is a few more on eBay. They came populated from Japan, but buttons and joysticks do need replacing on them. Weather is not great at mo, I was lucky enough to do it in the house. Buttons and joysticks I got from arcade world UK, fantastic service everytime.

Thanks Craig, ideal for the bigger areas.
As for the dirt and smell, mine was grubby on the outside but years of thick dust and grime on the inside. As Craig says though it quickly and easily cleans off. These have obviously been working for a living, but stood up well.
Mine didn’t smell as such, but after rooting around inside my hands stunk of cigarettes. Dust and grime gone though, smell gone!
