The bit I was missing is that people have their exposure time increased on their phones/cameras to get the lovely images you generally see.

This was from my garden earlier in the year. I could see almost naff-all with my eyes

It looked like just a glow from ambient street lights for a while but when I pointed my phone at it, you could see all the reds and greens. When I went to somewhere dark you could see large coloured blobs with the naked eye but the phone picked up the photons better than my eyes could.

The phone picked it up very well to start off but it wasn’t long before you could see the red glow clearly, including lines in it.
I too once went to Iceland but didn’t see them do was made up last night - clearly visible to the naked eye for about 39 minutes at ten o clock

In Iceland, the only colour you usually see is green. Those of us lucky enough to see them down here got some lovely reds thrown into the mix too. For anyone keen to see them again, there's now an app (obvs) that gives you a heads up. It's called Aurora.
