I have a 9th gen i5 and a RTX 2060 and it's coped admirably with everything I've played so far. I even whacked Alyx settings up to Ultra as an experiment, and everything seems to play fine, but might start to chug a bit when things get busy.

I've never tried VR before getting the Quest, but the screen door effect seems minimal and only noticeable if you look for it. I simply don't notice it when busy playing a game. The Quest screens are OLED too and the Quest 2 are higher res, but I'm betting they're not OLED (I might be wrong).

That's great to hear, the screen door effect was pretty bad back then. The DK2 resolution was 960 x 1080 per eye. The Quest is 1440 × 1600 per eye and the Quest 2 is 1832 x 1920 per eye. That's some step up from the earlier days!

Yes, I think you're right, the Quest 2 isn't OLED which is a shame.

You'll be able to pick up an original Quest pretty cheaply in the next few weeks I reckon, as there's currently a stampede of people selling theirs to pre-order the Quest 2, and CeX seem to be reducing their buy price on a daily basis. I think a lot of them are going to regret their haste, personally.

That might not be a bad idea, I'll keep a look out.

The trouble with watching videos of VR stuff is that they look crap compared to the experience in VR, which is all encompassing in true stereoscopic 3D. A vid of Alyx will give you a basic idea of what you're missing, though.

Agreed, even the early VR videos were nothing in comparison to the experience once immersed in a game and I'm sure that's even more true now. I try not to watch too much video on any game, VR or other wise, as you just end up spoiling the game. It's like watching a film trailer which ends up showing all the good bits of a movie. I'll probably just have a good read about it and save the video for the game its self.

I've got an oldish i5 system with a GTX1080 so hopefully I could play some games with that.

The 1080 is certainly powerful for 95% of VR game running with everything turned on, quite a lot with SS too, the only game I can think of that needs tweaking is PCars2.

That's great news, thanks!

I really want to play a game called Technolust. I loved the demo and ended up backing it at a fairly high level on kickstarter and I should be in the game somewhere. I never did get to play the full version so I'm hoping I can do so now. I don't think it's 'Quest compatible' but I'm hoping I can play it by linking it to the PC.

Santa brought the kids a quest 2 for xmas and have to say I'm properly impressed. My only experience prior to this was the gear VR on my phone, but this is a lot more immersive. We only have Beatsabre, walkabout golf and space pirate trainer but they are really addictive and can see it getting used a lot.

The lens adjustment has not been an issue, once it was set we've not needed to change it. The head band is crap though so it will be getting the upgraded head band at some point.

Any game recommendations appreciated, but no intention to connect it to a PC yet.Haves19792020-12-28 11:55:04

Yeah, the stock headband is a bit crap. I've done a Frankenquest mod to mine (fitted a VIVE Deluxe Audio Strap), but it's not cheap.

There's loads on good games on the Quest, so just depends on what kind of games you like? Look into installing SideQuest on a PC, too. There's lots of free stuff on it to sideload, like Echo VR.

I got a quest 2 after someone bought one in to work and I had a quick demo - The wife loves Beat Saber (not many of my gadgets she likes other than the pinball machines)

not got many games for it yet, but 'down the rabbit hole' is an interesting way to play an adventure game and we also got 'the room' since a few people I know recommended it.

need a good shooter next

not go anything on the PC to link to it, although it tested out OK with the Steam VR test thingy, nvidia 1660ti & Ryzen 7 3700x - don't really use it for games, but needed a better gfx card for video editing / compression etc.

will keep looking here for recommendations

I'll give these a go thanks and will try SideQuest.

If you want an arcade style shooter, try space pirate trainer. Sounds crap, but it's really addictive and been compared to Galaga. Can download a free trial level too.

Yeah, I've got Space Pirate Trainer, and it's good fun.

Macro, if the SteamVR test says you're good to go, you have to get Half-Life Alyx. It's amazeballs! There's a few good native shooters on the Quest, too. In Death: Unchained it really good if you fancy a bow and arrow shooter.

I got "In Death : Unchained", "Space Pirate Trainer" and 'gun club VR' in their new year sale, so should keep me busy for a while.

Also been playing "Racket :NX tonight", that's better than a workout video!

oh, and finally reached 'S' on beat saber on $100 bills (I didn't realise you needed to wave the saber around quite as much and was going for minimal wrist action ala Wii games)

Yeah, VR is a great way to workout without even realizing. Sweat like a pig playing Beat Saber, but I just can't stop!

I can get SS ranking quite often but some of my Oculus friends are are crazy good, and keep beating my scores. And yeah, you need to slice the blocks with a big sweep, and as close to the centre as possible, to get the scores up. I also play with the disappearing arrows and speedup mod, to inscrease score.

VR is highly recommended for lockdown!

After chatting with a friend, the other half decided that she would like Boxing VR - except it is called Fit XR on the quest 2 - she likes it quite a lot!

it's a bit like beat sabre, but you punch the targets instead with jabs, uppercuts, round house and blocks, along with ducking under things - gets quite energetic.

plus it has aerobics / dance routines in it as well!

so if you need to lose some weight, this one is also a contender (although personally I end up sweating buckets playing Death:Unchained!)
