[ukvac] Off topic but IMPORTANT Junk Mail
Further to my previous a while a go I'm still getting huge amounts of junk mail, mainly porn and start accepting credit cards. It's really annoying as I'm very careful where my e-mail address goes. It all started when I joined this group and I need to know if now they have our e-mail addresses theres any way to stop it. If you try to reply to remove as the messages say it gets returned unable to deliver. BASTARDS!

HELP!!!!

Jake

ps How annoying is it to receive a pcb with the bolts which holds the boards together missing. Where do they go? Odd sock land perhaps!

Re: [ukvac] Off topic but IMPORTANT Junk Mail
1) Yahoo sell email address lists to "companies we work with"
2) They give lists to the companies they work with, and so on
3) Spambots harvest addresses from list archives
4) Some bots get subscribed to lists and harvest that way
5) even worse: there are programs that given a domain, will try to mail
thousands of first name.last name combinations out - in the knowledge that
lots of people use those. Take ntlworld.com for example. Write down 100
names and 100 surnames, the chances of hitting a valid address with some or
more combinations is extremely high.

**NEVER** reply to the "remove me" mails, they use this to trick people into
showing they have a valid address on their list. Always use an extra address
when signing up for "free" services, email lists, and the like. Always post
to newsgroups with a mangled from address (but so that a human reader can work
out what it is). Avoid name.surname addresses like the plague.

It's impossible to get off lists by the way, you just have to either filter it
with your mail client, switch to an ISP with a strict mailserver, or change
your address...

Couldn't we just find the companies that are spamming us and pump nerve
gas into the air-conditioning system in the building they work from?

I think there is an issue with fake subscriptions getting on the
Yahoogroups lists to get a harvest of email addresses sent to them.
While this sort of use of the lists probably represents a form of fraud
and breach of privacy, there doesn't seem to be much interest in the
combating of spam by any official body.

Incidentally, you should NEVER replay to regular spam that suggests you
can get removed from their list by emailing them with their fake
"remove" post, since this just confirms that your address is valid and
active.

I wonder if they scan the whole mails? In which case.....

That's quite subtle, I was thinking of a more physical approach.

Just out of interest, is there a list of physical addresses of
professional spam companies? It would be nice to know if there were any
nearby in order to make their lives a bit more unpleasant.

Re: [ukvac] Off topic but IMPORTANT Junk Mail
Problem is that most companies don't know what spam really means. I have
contacted a few companies by phone with regards to their spamming and it
turned out that some company sold them "electronic direct marketing".
When I told them what happens they are sometimes shocked but mostly
don't care because they got some sales out of it.

I don't mind spam, as long as it is targeted to the right user. take
Eudora email for instance, you fill in this big form with all your
personal likes and dislikes and 9 out of 10 ads they show (sponsor paid
email prog) are of interest to me, I have bought several items over the
net after seeing an ad in Eudora, so you see, it can be done the right
way.

For now I suggest you switch to imap mail and only retrieve subjects,
most spam mail you can spot a mile away and thus delete before you waste
bandwidth.
