Thought it's about time to show you fellow collectors some of the work I've been doing in the last few years, I don't just post a load of rubbish, genuinely love these old games and collecting and working on these classic machines
smiley1.gif

So Operation Wolf is one of my earliest Memories of playing A Video Game in arcade, don't remember where I played it but wasn't in Leicester arcades as I remember most games in those and where they were in each arcade.

Used to love my C64 and remember having the Demo Of Op Wolf, 1st stage only. so when I upgraded to Atari ST I bought Op Wolf for it, one of the few games I did buy. Wasn't a bad Home computer conversion, Graphics pretty close, just music that doesn't match the Arcade. After that I had Amiga for few years, then life changes when you start working, don't have the time as your busy doing other things, passing driving test so going places with mates. I'd sold my Amiga and only had Game Gear left which then got stolen out car so didn't play any video games for a while, Golden Axe, Fatman and some others on brothers Sega Megadrive were last games I played

Started working for Computer company repairing Monitors, Computers, Printers etc, though i'd only ever played games on C64, ST and Amiga which I'd sold, never really seen a PC before and never used one, didn't even know what Hard Drive was but as they also built Computers downstairs it didn't take long to learn, I was soon working out using Dos so I could play Prince of Persia and other early games. Then saw lads down stairs playing games like Wolfenstein 3D was quite stunned when first saw Alone in the Dark, just my sort of game, had to build my own PC to play these, Wish I knew what year it was, so been trying to work it out from the games and when they were out, PC I started building was nearly best at the time with 486DX33 with 40mb HD and 2mb ram, 486DX266 had only just started to be used in the ones they built up for customers, Pentium 60 came out March 1993, though I probably hadn't heard about it here till 1994 with prices when new, X-Wing was 1993 and Alone in Dark was 1992, by time my PC built other lad had bought Alone In Dark 2, going on that it must of been 1993 when I built it I had to photocopy and make the Protection cards that came with it to answer the questions as it was disk version

Then my colleague at work was looking for stuff on Bulletin Boards one day, he found and downloaded C64 Emulator and some games, he also had a few games still and converted his to play, this was so cool, being able to play old C64 stuff I hadn't seen for years, I honestly thought some of the games couldn't be the ones I played as the graphics looked too poor, but the reality was that's how bad they did look. International Karate still looked and played great though, Bruce Lee wow hadn't seen that since playing on my mates Atari 800xl along with Track & Field Cart with Touch Pad Controller, still remember him buying that for £10 Game and proper Touch pad for playing it, I have one for my C64 now with Disk version. Also Goonies, Pengo and more

Next came Arcade Emulator, It was Dos Based one with early games like Space Invaders, Pac-Man Galaxian, all the really early ones, then it would get updated with later stuff from mid 80's, was amazing to see these old games again but the real arcade versions. As the PC was
upgraded more games kept being added, till we had ones lie Green Beret, 1942, Popeye, then when we got Double Dragon, Bad Dudes, POW and Operation Wolf, really amazing times, just couldn't believe all these old arcade games were playable on this PC, was such a brilliant time

Thats what started me off, wanted to hear that Operation Wolf Opening music again, so long since I'd heard it in Arcade. Atari ST and Amiga versions were good but not as the Arcade. I was playing OP wolf with Mouse, but it just doesn't cut it and playing without the Gun, well..... I was then planning to get proper Joysticks to hook up to PC was before the days of Ultimarc so you would have to hack keyboard or something but never got that far with it

Used to pick up loads of items cheap, got a Paddington Bear, seemed to be quite old, had makers name on it which turned out to be started by Jeremy Clarksons Mum, Looking for Info on it I found this site ebay, would of been 2000, wondered what the site was, then realising people are selling items on it, these Bears were on there and fetching £50-70, I get looking for other items like old Ghetto Blasters, BMX then I find Arcade Machines, you can't believe there are still ones around and people selling them, but this was mainly on Ebay.com, for the next 6 months or so I keep looking at things on there, said to my mate who downloaded all this stuff, If I see an Operation Wolf machine for sale over here I'm buying it

He would say similar things all the time but never did any of them, I'm different, so one night I'm looking on ebay UK and Can't believe it, Operation Wolf, there really is one on and it's in UK, Bridlington and ending the next morning, having had a few jars, I quickly sign up to ebay, not knowing how it works I put a bid on it, it was probably about £70 before, but after I bid it's £86, can't remember what max bid was and didn't understand how It worked, went bed, woke up next morning partly forgetting about it, then remembering something about ebay and bidding I better check what happened

OMG, I've won it, now what!! I sent guy a message and went work, had a look when home and he replied He did offer to deliver it in listing, we agreed on price and he arranged a night to drop it down
all way from Bridlington, he arrived with it on Trailer, I shown they were I need it to go, WOW I didn't realise just how big them look in your house, It's huge, he did say you couldn't of bought one much bigger. don't know how they managed it, but they got it through my porch door, front door through hall and into lounge.

Plugged it in and don't work, just jumbled up mess on screen, monitor eht cap sparking, I thought this hasn't been tested like the said, I was going to pay them £60 I think for delivering, he said he'd let me have it for the £86 I won it for, but I like to be fair even though not working, so I just gave them £100, oh well start at deep end no issue sorting monitor out as I fixed TV's for years, then I started looking on ebay for replacement pcb, was a few months when one came up won that for £27 + postage after a week waiting no sign, I phoned the seller up, which happend to be Arcade Warehouse
(didn't know about them then) they said it hadn't been posted yet, but promised it would be sorted straight away, next day it arrived in Pizza box, not best start but after fitting it in machine, plugged in and wow it works Monitor had to have Lopt replaced too, so ended up costing about same when fixed as the original price with delivery

I then found out it didn't have original Glass, had no artwork, must of been the only one without it I've seen, took me years of searching and asking to get that, ended up having to buy another machine in poor condition just for that, got it complete in the end and worked for long time without issues

That now leads me to this one that I've restored and why I wanted Op Wolf machine, so I was a bit reluctant to let the Full Size one go, It was my first Arcade Machine and reason I signed up to use ebay, first Item I won from ebay too

From the day I got Op Wolf it got me thinking It would be amazing to have Operation Thunderbolt to go with it, but there were other machines I'd like too so maybe I should get different game like Outrun, not another shooting game and the size of these cabs I thought maybe not. What I didn't know till years later they did this Single Site machine as Electrocoin call and Op Thunderbolt the Midi one. So that got me thinking, what if I sell the Full Size Wolf and get Smaller one I could squeeze in Op Thunderbolt Midi also, so that was the plan. Started to see odd ones coming up, seller in Derby
sold one which buyer didn't collect, it ended around £92, he also had Op Thunderbolt full size, so I offered them £200 for both

Spoke to them on the phone and happy with my offer, I collected Wolf straight away in my car and hired a van 2 days after to collect Thunderbolt. they also had an Outrun Mini when we collected machines and was listed on ebay couple of days later, that was about £400 and this was about 4 years ago

So then the mission started to get the old one out of Games Room down Garden, back into the house and to front of extension and get the Single Site Wolf in extension at back
only trouble was this smaller Wolf was litterally falling apart, it's all coming unglued.

Full size one had a few issues by now, so I sorted those out, had sound fault on pcb so I swapped it with one in this Mini and sold to Indy jones here for £350 I think, really was gutted to sell my first cab and first item from ebay but needs must, I believe he sold it to James so my original Op Wolf is now at Arcade Club
smiley1.gif

So then the restoration began on this new Op Wolf. First thing I did was test it. was working as they said but won't register shots, I find out the front tube of Gun is missing, so no lens which would explain the fault, typicaly I sold 2 complete guns over the past years, should never sell spares

The Op Thunderbolt came from the same seller, he said there were a few spare parts in the machine, so when I'd picked that up and got it back, had a look in the bottom of it, lots of stuff covered in dust but I couldn't believe my luck, not only a broken Thunderbolt gun in there for spares, there was a Namco Game PCB Steel Gunner 2 with conversion cable to play it in Thunderbolt cab, there is a flyer for this, and amazingly a complete Operation Wolf gun with front tube and lens, such a good job I bought this Thunderbolt as well. along with those some paperwork and faxes from Electrocoin, more Op Thunderbolt pcb aux boards.

With the parts fitted I test Op Wolf and yep, it's working fine

So first Mission is the BIG Move around

01-Moving.jpg

Was looking ok at this point but cab is a bit loose

The Arcade Building nightmare below, wish machines hadn't been so cheap, I'd still have space now, so I have to move loads of this out to get Op Wolf Full Size

02-Moving.jpg

03-Moving.jpg

It's a Mirror at side, there is only one Op Wolf cab there, the left back is Chase HQ and Taller Mad Dog and that's the Compact model, in front right is Streets Penny Bowl

04-Moving.jpg

Forgot how big this cab was, in some ways pleased it's going

05-Moving.jpg

Not easy moving everything on your own
smiley11.gif

06-Moving.jpg

Wasn't a bad condition machine really, starting to get dark by the time I'd shifted all the stuff to get it out and down to the house, only to struggle getting it in side, mainly because of the height and having to raise it up to get over door frame, if only I'd known everything at the start, would of had doors like games room with Alloy trim at bottom only, far better.

07-Moving.jpg

The would with wheels on it inside was off the bottom of a Continental Circus Upright, the metal strips on inside is where the lean on seat can slide in and out

08-Moving.jpg

After trying everything only option left was to lay it down on side, which is fine if you have space and don't break your back lifting it back upright when inside, wasn't easy

09-Moving.jpg

After getting it inside, I thought we'd compare the size of these cabs
smiley3.gif

10-Moving.jpg

Quite a bit smaller in every way

11-Moving.jpg

Now the new mini one is really falling apart

12-Moving.jpg

14-Car.jpg

When pulling it out car, I get to see the state the base is in, yep that's going to need replacing.
smiley18.gif
more work

15-inside.jpg

Just a little bit of dust
smiley36.gif

16-inside.jpg

17-outCar.jpg

Was just after getting out car

18-fallingapart.jpg

Insides falling apart too as well as mess with cables

19-fallingapart.jpg

20-spares.jpg

All the parts that came out Op Thunderbolt cab, Steel Gunner 2 in Cardboard and foam, amazing to get the gun parts needed and other parts I needed for the next cab

21-working.jpg

Not bad to get the machine basically working though, after lens and gun barrel fitted anyway

22-Cleanmonitor.jpg

Gave the monitor a clean

23-Cleanmonitor.jpg

24-takeapartr.jpg

Now I have to dissasemble the whole cab. strip the cab down, strip the guns down and get all the metal to sand blasters and powder coaters. Other things need doing like work on cars so it was about 2 years before I get around to rebuilding this machine again, couldn't believe it was in bits so long, and when you can't play it you want to, when its working you don't play it

25-takeapartr.jpg

26-takeapartr.jpg

Luckily it comes apart without to much issue

27-takeapartr.jpg

28-Metal.jpg

Next Job while this goes to be painted was the Base

Some more pics of the Mad Dog, this is when I got the cab

MadDogworks.jpg

Not sure which Amiga board they should have but this had 500+ the game doesn't work when connected properly, but the monitor and laserdisc work ok if the control disconnected

The Sharks were from ebay, one of those things you bid on and then wonder what to do with them
smiley36.gif
I always liked the Film and had the old Jaws Toy which I have another boxed one now

I asked on the forums if anyone knew what they were from and one did, came off these machines, this was on ebay last year, I have 2 of them but still not decided where to put them, was thinking outside somewhere, they have a light in roof of mouth so thinking they can light up again with LED bulb on 12v, also has some copper pipe in it's mouth so think it must of shot some water at the player maybe

Thanks for the pictures of your Mad Dog McCree cabinet!

The Amiga motherboard should be an NTSC REV.6 Amiga 500 board, if you have a PAL Amiga 500 it will not work.

You can get a PAL Amiga 500 board modified if you're struggling to source an NTSC board.

If you ever get chance, please can you scan the marquee and side artwork?

It took me half the day just to get the machine moved out of here and back in the house, so much stuff to move about to get to them, there are lots more pictures, a few more showing some of the things I had to move first. I did start to get this sorted out in there with machines working, but then kept buying more and just fill the room up, which is stupid as now I can't enjoy half of it which is pointless, need to sort this out

Back to the cab, in some ways I was pleased it was all falling apart, the panel the gun sits on was in poor state, someone scratched letters into it and because the gun pivot wears it had worn into the front metal corner trim, so that needed repainting and only way to remove is take cab apart, also one of front corners was damaged, someone had bodged back another bit of wood that didn't match and wasn't straight, turned out to me a major rebuild but well worth doing and I do like a challenge. The gun once complete again hits on the glass and had been rubbed across the metal holding glass in

Interesting, that's something I will have to look into in future. when I've got things more sorted I will happily scan the artwork from it

So with the Base falling apart by now. I needed to remake that completely

Usually I would remake it exact as the original, I like things factory but then if you can improve something for a change why not. thinking about the Op Thunderbolt machine being on wheels, why did they not put these on wheels, so that was my plan. make it easier to move but keep it looking original

29-Base.jpg

30-Base.jpg

31-Base.jpg

32-Base.jpg

33-Base.jpg

Had to redesign some of it to make it work with the wheels, but make it look as close to original as possible while hiding the wheels so you wouldn't know it was on them

34-Base.jpg

35-Base.jpg

36-Base.jpg

37-Base.jpg

38-Base.jpg

39-Base.jpg

40-Base.jpg

Most of the parts are all used, the bolts, T-Nuts, Wheels from machines taken apart, reuse everything and left over wood, only new on it is Rubber Matting and screws.

41-Base.jpg

42-Base.jpg

Paint removed from original trim and fitted and base was finished, quite pleased with how it turned out and when on floor it's close enough you can't see wheels but not too close to wheel it about. cut out some areas so it doesn't cover the vent under the cab, only one part I did wrong as I couldn't remember which way the cut out at back was, so I got it upside down
smiley9.gif

44-Base.jpg

So that now just bolts onto the bottom of the cab like normal
smiley1.gif
cut outs at back of side holes so you can get nuts on and spanner in to tighten

You need to sell half those cabs, keep your favourites and have a proper games room you can enjoy.

that was it a few years back, now its worse, 3 of them are going tho 2 are goliath jamma, need to sort stuff on them first,,i can see the afterburner getting sold when i can get to it

Ive just comletely screwed myself up with projects, having own cars to repair hasnt helped as most summers gone doing them, other things ive bought not arcade related taking space, 2 gearboxes in bits trying to modify them, so cant sort one thing out because of something else, and that for something else, then i cant do these goliaths unless i pull them outside, then with this weather cant do that so another job i want to do is sort roof over my patio, going to design and build myseld to save on cost, that will allow me to work on stuff any days what ever weather doing, put some things i have outside like elephant and chicken vending machines and get few other jobs finished to sell stuff, then more machines can go where they need to be.

Totally agree though, its pointless having them and cant play them, really bugs me so time to sort it now and buy nothing else when some go

I wish I could do woodworking. I am terrible at it! Could never do this.

Didn't think I'd be very good, at school all I did was mess about in woodwork, but I do remember stuff like Steaming wood to bend which I used not long back, we did Vacuum Forming plastic which helped me on 2 machines, my parents still take the pee for the reports from the teachers in these lessons but If the teachers saw what I've been doing the last few years I think they would be pleased their time wasn't completely wasted on me

It's problems like this that get you in the mess, I sold 2 of the Goliaths as I decided to keep the Dino Cabs I got cheap, so sell the 4 big cabs, fit in the 4 tiny Dino instead, only issue was I sell 2 Goliath cabs, then soon as a bit of space back, Star Wars Sitdown pops up on ebay, wasn't intending to bid but as the auction runs and price still cheap it makes you think, so then I bid and win that, 2 of the EC Sente cabs go down the bottom, all rational thoughts just go out window, thinking stuff like, it's only 2 jamma cabs the space it takes up. So before I know it I've done it again
smiley18.gif

From what I've seen, I'm not the only one but will sort this out, Don't even look on ebay much now, at anything, so I don't see stuff and buy it, no more arcade machines what ever came up I can't buy anything

Nice work so far, looking good!

I'm always jealous when I see pics of your collection. Understand completely about having to many cabs though, I've probably got twice as many as I have space for although I am working on a solution. It's just to tempting when you see something you want, especially when you may not get a other chance to get one. I do admire people who are disciplined enough to say no though.

No way I'd be picking that Op Wolf up off the floor with my back. Feeling a twinge just thinking about it

All I'm going to say is clearly that Outrun DLX isn't getting the love it deserves. Time to move it on to someone who will refurb every nut and bolt on it, eh?

I'm pretty much out of space too, my work area is so crowded I just can't work on anything, it's quite depressing really. The upside is that I do have an area inside the house where I can enjoy playing a couple of my cabs.

I've got tomorrow off from work, I really need to have a tidy up and put away all the stuff I dug out to take to Revival as it's still all in boxes scattered around the hallway and living room.

Cheers Guys

This is how we end up with too much, if you don't buy things when you see it and then never see another you'll regret it more than if you did buy it. then so much used to be for sale in early days of ebay you can't help looking

My back wasn't good for long time, all the picking TV's up and then Laser Printers, so I thought haven't picked the best hobby really, not had many problems though, worst case I had with mine before I got arcade stuff, lay on bed early one night as my back was hurting, probably fell sleep for half hour, it was like 8pm when I woke up, better get some dinner and couldn't get off the bed, tried for 10/15 mins, every way possible but so much pain I couldn't get off it, hadn't got phone next to me either so no choice than go sleep if I could and hope in morning I was ok to move and luckily was, never been that bad since but surprised when doing this stuff
smiley18.gif

The Outrun was one of the main machines I wanted, couldn't wait to get one as I'd not played it on anything than upright those 2 or 3 times in 1987, sorry Flinnster
smiley1.gif
but its probably the last one that would go out of all them, Hope you find one sometime as they are cool

When you see pics of members games rooms and there all nicely set out and playable, it really makes you think thats how mine should look, and it is depressing when you can't even get to them or work on stuff. That's another problem I have, fetch stuff out trying to find something you need and don't put it all back, builds up then you have to spend a week doing it, just not enough time

I never did get the floor tiles finished in the extension, so I have a pile of those in here waiting to go down, been their for years now, but I kept buying more machines so now no space to put them down unless I move everything about and finnish some projects and sell them, that pile is taking space of a cab that could come out the other building, then I bought those Arcade Carpet tiles, there are 2 big piles of those, I need to fetch half the machines out the building, pull up the ones in now, put some of these down which would free more cab space and I can sell the old ones again so more money, one thing would lead to another and sort some of it out

The Trolls machine is quite cool, can't find any more pics at moment, must be some. It's one of the steer a ball type ones, turn the Wheel and it moves big disc inside and aim to get ball to bottom of the platforms and down the win hole, never seen another one since buying it, partner loves 80's stuff too, 2 things being Cabbage Kids and Trolls so we had to buy it for her

Wood working isn't that hard if you have a go, that was done with basic tools, Circular Saw, Jigsaw, Electric Plane, those wood recess cutters that Aldi had in, so you can make hole a few mm deep for the T-Nuts, Electric Sander and thats all I had. If your doing more jobs though, I've now got a Evolution Table Saw, £150 and they saw metal, wood and plastic with one blade, so jobs like this even easier now. All you need to do these days is watch a few videos on you tube to get some basics and good tips and most can do this stuff

I really enjoy it now, hate taking anything to places to have jobs done, nothing anyone seems to do in Leicester is ever done right, things I have done coz I can't like power coating, they always miss bits, mess it up, get plastic cut it's not size I asked or last lot they managed to scratch half of it. so I want to do everything thing myself now, want to sort out Sandblasting setup next save that being done elsewhere
