OK, I'll have a look at that ;o)

Well, running on the assumption that UKVAC is meant to be a "open community",
http(s) would offer advantages thus:
a) availability - far more people would have access, even from work behind
$EVILCORPS firewalls
b) security - run it as a SSL service and not have to worry about groups
of script kiddies and power-crazed supers spying on you
c) customisable - an IRC channel is an IRC channel - bland and un-unique
- why not take pride in UKVAC and provide a UKVAC specific service
d) Local - the members can run the service on their servers, rather than
relying on IRC servers globally.
I mean, I could go on with a hundred reasons not to use IRC, but I guess
it wouldn;t make a difference, as your counter argument would be
"what we've got works, so why change". Maybe some are afraid of change,
but I say "yeah, it works, but it could be better". OK, this will fall
on deaf ears, as you all know I am biassed against IRC, as I find
every time I venture anywhere near IRC, I find it with more than it's
fair share of idiots (both users and "superusers") who just wanna
frig around, taking away any idea of being able to use it for serious chat/
info finding. Not to mention the afore mentioned script kiddies and
virus spreaders on IRC. Yeah, I could spend ages building up a killfile
to minimise the idiots, but then again, can I be bothered, and would a
complete newbie be bothered or even know how to? For newcomers IRC
is far too hostile an environment (like the backs of smokey arcades
with idiots going to give you a hard time for trying to play on
"their reserved" machines ;o)
Oh, this is starting to drift, off I go.... laters...
