[ukvac] OT: Ebay Buyer ADVICE REQUIRED
Sorry for little OT but im after advice

Sold a UPS unit on ebay , was purchased from a friend that worked for
compaq
And it was new with stickers all over. So I sold it on Ebay as New no
warranty other than DOA.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3020329824&ssPageNa
me=ADME:B:EOAS:UK:3

Problem is this,

He collected unit paying cash after looking it over but not testing it.

Then 2hrs later he calls me saying he plugged it in and it exploded blue
smoke n all.

Now.. Where do I stand, I think he may of plugged 240v into it when set
at 110v (did he check voltage setting on back , was it 240? Was it
110v?)

Could it be genuine? I don’t know I HONESTLY did not try the unit from
memory as was 6 months prior I had it from m8 who tested it thorough be
sending it.

As I stated guaranteed from DOA where could I stand though.

If I ask him on phone did you check 110v setting he is bound to say and
switch it back if not that it was set correct at 240v

Any advice be appreciated

All Best

Adam

if it was set to 110v though how did your mate test it ? - it would seem
unlikely to me that he would test it on 240v then switch it back to 110v
(that's assuming he lives in the UK)

however, if it's been sitting for 6 months, that would mean that the
batteries are going to be totally flat, so maybe it then pulls more power to
charge up again ?

did you keep the serial number so you can check he's not just using yours to
replace one that had already died

(moral of the story, if they come round, make sure they see it working
before they leave!!)

Might not help this situation but for future encounters.

I might not guarantee things doa if I didn't know they worked personally.

I have a feeling the buyer is within his rights to call your guarantee in.
Guess it is the same one you sold right? Same serial # etc......

Just ask him exactly what he did...if he dosnt mention
the 110/240 switch prior to plugging it in.. then
there you have it..

Yeah im coming to conclusion gotta learn from this one.

I can only imagine it (rocker switch) could of moved to 110v in transit
or man handling to car, though only speculation.

I think I tested it when I got it , but so long ago I forgot

And stupidly yer I never took serial numbers :/

You live and learn I expect should of tested it again while he was here

Try testing things before you sell them with a guarantee!!
Other than that, take egg's advice!

Adam,

Well, I'd have to say it was your error on two counts...

1) Not checking it was set on 110V (or not even testing it yourself).

2) Not demonstrating it working with the buyer present (that would have
satisfied your DOA warranty obligation).

Generally, if you sell something as working, new or otherwise, then it's
a good idea to actually know if it works or not.

As it stands, refund his money.

Regards,

Paul.

If I subsequently won an auction where I was physically going to
collect the item personally, I'd of insisted of seeing it 'working'
before handing over the cash tbh.

As far as I can tell, an error on both parts, but moreso with
yourself for selling it as 'working' (whilst clearly not testing it
yourself - only going on a mates word that he tested it 6 months
ago).

Pot. Kettle. Black.

Mike

me being paraniod, I would say bugger off, why didn't he test it
when he collected it?? if I drove somewhere to pickup an auction
item I would test before handing over cash, I would say he has
tampered with it or is trying to give you his buggered old one back.
There aint a great deal that can go wrong in a ups, even if you do
put 240 into 110 they are pretty much protected and should just shut
down. I have messed around with loads of UPS's and never had one
smoke, cant think what is in there that would smoke.

Just my 2p's worth

Adam,

Just me being suspicious but the cash he gave you, did you check that?

Only a UPS like that would cost a fair bit paying by cash and it needing
to be returned sound a little like cleaning.

But then again I worked in a computer shop handling a large number of
cash sales, we had to check all the notes for sales > £100 it may have
scared me for life the amount of bogus notes we found that were "strait
from the cash machine".

Don't forget that B4 giving him the money back that you get the UPS
back, and test it yourself.

Later

Dave.
