[ukvac] OT: German eBay payments in Euros
Hi All,

Anyone bought anything off eBay in Germany in Euros?

What methods of payment do I have available, and which is the most cost
effective?
Will my bank be able to an online transfer to a German bank?
How much will a special Euro cheque cost me?

I bank with Halifax.

Cheers,

Easiest and cheapest way I've found is to get your Euros in cash at the post
office (commission free) and then send them by registered letter insured for
*that* amount. If you send a cheque from a UK bank and it gets cashed in a
different country they charge up to ?25+a percentage of the amount to cash
it. I have a multi-currency account and have been trying to make use of it
on ebay.de for ages! It all depends on who the seller banks with that's the
problem (oh and don't forget drawing a cheque in Euros from a UK bank
account will probably incur a fee too!)

Hope this helps, I know its not pleasant sending cash in the mail but if its
insured AND it needs a signature at the other end then its not so bad after
all )

cash in envolope is cheapest
send it regestered

umm i had a cheque made in euros and it was about a tenner
which worked out cheaper cos it was for a lot and u got the real exchange rate not the made up one u get in the travel agents

so all depends how much you are sending

Thanks for the info, guys! Pobs - If you have a multi-currency account, it
looks like you could have a nice little earner there, no?

I would guess that post office 'commission free' really means 'no
commission, but a shitty rate'.

I think I'll go for the cash in envelope option, as I can get a _really_
commission free deal and a shit-hot exchange rate at work ;-) I knew there
were some advantages for working in a bank...

Before anyone asks me any favours! :eek:P Although (as some of you know) I'm
a trader, which means I don't get charged any commission on converting
currencies and I also get to trade at the actual market price too, but its
not all good... For a start, my clearers won't post cash only cheques so I
need to get into the city to pick it up, the cheques aren't particularly
convenient as I said before, because even though they're in Euros, when
coming from a different country to which they're cashed incurs a charge
(although I don't get charged anything for drawing them myself). Also, my
account is a business one and any funds paid in have to be *ahem* clean!
Because of the dangers of looking like you're money laundering and then
being checked out. My account is clean on this note, but obviously if I
start paying loads of cash in the investigators might become curious and its
just a pain I could do without!

Oh ummm... Probably should point out that I don't trade currencies
themselves (in case of a flood of emails asking why I don't pay any
commission on trades! I know some of you do 'play' with your spare cash...)
I trade interest rate futures a' la Nick Leeson Barings Bank stylee and the
free currency trades I get are just because I get charged such high
commissions on the futures - kind of a freebie to offset the other costs.

Right! Glad that's all cleared up! Sorry for the OT everyone!)
