[ukvac] OT: Help killer USB ports!

Sorry for the Off-topic post,
please reply *off-list* so it doesn't upset anyone.

Built a PC(have done for years).
This was an ASUS P4S800-MX SE motherboard.
Wired the frontside USB ports(in the case) to the motherboard
checking that I'd got the idividual wires correct(+ve,-data,+data,gnd).
All installed with XPSP2 ok.

Put in my USB datakey/pendrive in one of the frontside ports and
nothing except for "not recognised" error from Windoze. Tried another
pendrive in the other port and still nothing apart from a white flash
from the pendrive, pulled it out and it smelled....ARSE and FECK! :-(
Luckily(very) put that pendrive in a rear port and it's ok - WOW.
The first pendrive is now dead. During all this I thought it may be
that the pendrives may be faulty/problematic as they were both USB1.1
and old. Plugged in my new Microsoft mouse into the fronts and
nothing, now that's buggered too(silly me for trying I guess).

I've *never* seen this behaviour in 15yrs or so of PC building!
Any ideas?

All the best,
DaveO.

Oll,

I did!!
Wired exactly as normal to the correct pins.
Did you read my complete post?
Standard wiring is(2 ports together), so even pins for one port and
odd pins for the other:-
1 Vcc
3 USB-
5 USB+
7 Gnd

There's one possiblity I suppose, the wires on the header wire don't
go to the correct places on the front panel(hidden away). Could
happen as the case was only £25(inc. PSU) or so and made in a sweat-
shop in China or sommik! ;-)

Cheers,
Dave.

I've seen them where I had to re-wire the connector as the pinouts
were different on the motherboard than to the connector.

My two connectors were side by side in one plug, variations iirc were
a mirrored image of one side or rotate 180'.

Think I had to measure with a meter to find the supply polarity.

Cheers, Col

I checked the pinout in the manual(just to be sure as always) and
they are the "standard" layout as per my previous posts.
Only seen a different pinout once before on a separate generic
manufactured 3 1/2 bay kit.

It could be a mis-print in the manual?
As you say I should put a DVM on it, sadly it was off to a customer
so I simply didn't wire the front-sides up for now.

I'll go back and check with a DVM.

Thanks for the help,
DaveO.
