[ukvac] OT: Microsoft replacing xbox power cables

Yes, it's true, if your box is older than about a year and a bit they're
doing a safety replacement...

http://replacements.webprogram.com/en-gb/programoverview.asp

I havent tapped in my serial number and manufacture date yet (cause i
haven't looked it up yet) so i don't know if it's 100% free including
postage and everything, but all it said on the news website i saw this on
was that it was a free replacment.

All 14.1million of them.

That's gotta hurt!!

Aparently worldwide there has been something like 30 cases of the cable
catching fire due to a defect...

Martin.

Very odd, my manufacture date is june 2002 yet it says it doesn't need one
:)

Let's try that again in a Microsoft Browser!!

Re: [ukvac] OT: Microsoft replacing xbox power cables

If the box could actually hold onto the date and time for more than 2 minutes
after being unplugged from the mains then they wouldn't need to be plugged
in permanently and would save power.
I know it doesn't excuse faulty cables but come on, in this day and age a
cr2032 isn't that hard to build in..
If it's for a safety replacement then they should do something about that
faulty ethernet port at the same time, seems to be leaking information again.

Amazing how well it works when you get the date and serial number correct
)

Apologies if that's old news BTW, but I hadn't heard of it before...

Re: [ukvac] OT: Microsoft replacing xbox power cables

I've heard the "rumor" is that the cables aren't faulty, but infact
Microsoft just want the names/addresses of everyone with an Xbox so
they can directly sell to them the Xbox 2 as an upgrade path. Also
Aliens visited us 40 years ago, and no-one has ever landed on the
moon.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Microsoft replacing xbox power cables

Quite possibly, but a) too late for that now I've already filled it in! b)
I'm a sucker for new consoles anyway :)

Seems like a pretty expensive way to go about getting name and adress
details...

I know a cable doesn't cost much but bad publicity, postage and distribution
costs don't come cheap, so there have to be cheaper ways of getting names
and addresses.

Like from the post office?

And, yes, I know Microsoft won't even feel a dent. So what?

Martin.

[ukvac] Re: OT: Microsoft replacing xbox power cables

As long as the co. involved mailsorts there mass delivery then
postage costs would be very very small, I did some work for a large
bulk mailer, letters cost a couple of pence to send. So to f**k them
up just dont give them your postcode, then they cant mailsort them,
although you only need to mailsort 80%ish to qualify.

I must admit when I read the story it did sound like a marketing scam
to get names and addresses, how could MS screw up all power cables
across the world? how can you screw up a standard power cable anyway??

RE: [ukvac] Re: OT: Microsoft replacing xbox power cables

Does mailsort even apply to packages / parcels?

I spent over 12 years doing mailsort programming and the like for a bulk
mailer but it was all financial documents - invoices and mobile file bills
and the like (and council tax bills come to think of it!) so I don't know if
it does.

I guess there must be an equivalent.

Yep, all sounds a bit iffy to me but at the least if it get me a free power
cable :)

LOL, I think that's a standard Dell 'small' box! I remember a magazine article commenting about them sending warranty certificates (or some other paperwork) in the same boxes.
