[uk-vac] OT: PayPal Question
Guys,
PayPal question - I sent an item to a buyer in France (a mobile, sold as
non-working) and despite clearly stating on my auction page if a buyer wants
recorded/insured postage it will cost more and they will need to ask for it,
they did neither and paid standard airmail postage.
Now they have filed a claim with PayPal stating item not received (giving it
5 working days to get to them) and PayPal only gives me 3 options - refund,
provide a tracking number or give evidence of a refund previously made!
I have had issues with PayPal in the past and recorded postage as a seller,
but thought I was covered legally as I state if they want insurance they
will need to inform me and pay more in my sellers postage instructions.
PayPal replied to my 'pissed off' email with the steps taking me to the 3
options above again.
Anything I can do to stop them just taking the money out of my account and
giving it back to the buyer, leaving me £30 out of pocket?
Let me know,
Cheers,
Paul

No - you're fucked. With Paypal you absolutely MUST insist on trackable
shipping or this can happen, and there's nothing at all you can do about
it apart from 1) comply in some way, or 2) get the buyer to cancel the
dispute.

Just another reason why I personally do not accept Paypal unless it's
someone I know and trust.

Probably not! It's never happened to me but it seems like a constant danger when using paypal.
Their 'protection' programs seem to be geard more towards protecting the buyer.

Could you try giving a false tracking number?!

Andy.

p.s. check out paypalsucks.com if you don't already know how at risk your money is.

Well, I guess they can't take whats not there!

In one regard I understand that there is a principle involved, but it could
have been much worse. With this kind of thing you should state that insured
delivery is the only option available.

Did you get a receipt from the Post Office? This is also your proof of
posting which Paypal might accept.

Re: [uk-vac] OT: PayPal Question
this is why i never EVER send anything to people unless they pay for
special delivery if they pay via paypal. buyer pays postage always. if
they dont like it they dont buy it, simple as that.

Oh yes, thay can!
Even if you empty your paypal account, if they re-fund the buyer, it will get charged to your credit card.

RE: [uk-vac] OT: PayPal Question
5 Days!!!!! I would expect it to take longer than that. I would contact the
buyer and ask him to wait another week.
Personally, I don't like it when Insurance is an option on top of postage
costs, I would always say it was the responsibility of the seller. When I
sell stuff on ebay I generally decide whether to insure it or not based on
its selling price and how much the actual postage cost is compared to the
quoted postage costs, sometimes I even loose a little money on the final
selling price if the postage came to more.

I wouldn't see it as £30 out of pocket though, you would only loose your
postage cost and a phone that would have only be thrown away.

I had this happen to me. If you do not refund, you will get a hefty
charge from Paypal on top. Since this I have refused to accept Paypal
from outside the UK. I don't get any overseas orders now, but I don't
care. Paypal can get stuffed as far as I'm concerned.

Re: [uk-vac] Re: OT: PayPal Question
Might be worth investigating the buyers history, to see if he has done this before to anyone else.....it sucks
I use paypal to pay, but never accept it, unless its a friend and due to the fees i don't like that either.

Re: [uk-vac] OT: PayPal Question
The fact you stated it was not working is irrelevant! The issue is to do with the buyer filing a claim with PayPal stating item not received.

Thanks for highlighting this situation as I was thinking of selling on Ebay for the first time.

I will certainly insist on recorded delivery and a tracking number
