[uk-vac] OT: PC cooling question - Innovative solution needed!
Hi Guys,

In my never-ending quest to silence my PC, I decided to give water-cooling a
go. I've bought a Waterchill cooling system, but of course buying and
fitting one of those would be far too easy (and noisy).

So, I want to take out the fan-cooled radiator it's supplied with and
replace it with a rad I bought off eBay for a Kawasaki GPX600. I figure this
size of radiator will let me run fanless. It will also fit on the side of
the PC case just fine. (Actually, I bought a GPZ rad as well, for
contingency...)

The problem I have is tube connections. The tube that comes with the
Waterchill kit is 10mm OD/7mm ID, and the connection on the GPX radiator is
a 20mm hose connector, and it obviously doesn't fit. See below:

First guess, I could use some 20mm ID motorcycle radiator tubing and
something to convert that tubing down to 7mm.

Anyone know how I can do this?
Alternatively, anyone have an ingenious solution that I would never think
of?
Anyone have any spare 20mm motorcycle hose?
Anyone tried this mouldable alloy paste stuff that turns hard?
What about flexible silicon sealant?

All thoughts appreciated!

Phil

hi
you could try a pond fitting, the fitting for my pump has a reducer you just
cut it to the size required its a tappered fitting from about 20mm down to 5
mm . either glue fit or jubilee clip

How about using a peltier element ?. I remember seeing unix
workstations many years ago using them on Power PC processors.

I'm not sure why using a motorcycle radiator without a fan is going to help
you?

A motorcycle radiator is designed to be used with either a fan or at the
very least 30mph - 150mph of wind hitting it. Aren't you still going to need
a fan of some sort to assist with heat dissipation and try to blow cold(ish)
air onto the radiator?

Why don't you just stick with the stock radiator and go with a 120mm fan on
a low speed setting. I have a 120mm fan connected to the outside of my
shuttle system (now resigned to server, and next week to be completely
retired). It IS silent.

Here's a pic of the finished mod:
http://www.guddler.co.uk/images/dscf0029.jpg

I realise that you may not be able to do exactly this but it may help with
some alternative ideas.

Basically the machine as stock has a relatively noisy psu fan so this was
replaced with a 40mm silen-X version. This requird opening up the PSU and
soldering. The northbrige chip had a whiny fan (40mm again I think) and that
was replaced with a Zalman passive northbridge heatsink - obviously silent.
Finally the stock setup for the processor is a heatpipe affair going off to
a radiator that is cooled by an 80mm fan. The 80mm was removed, the grill on
the back of the case was removed with a dremel. A rubber silencing grommet
was used between the case and the 80mm->120mm adapter, then a 120mm silen-X
fan was used on the outside of the case in place of the internal 80mm fan.
Final mod was to cut the bottom of the HDD caddy out so that I could fit
rubber grommets between it and the HDD, thus removing the vibrations of the
HDD.

End result? Silence. Obviously, you start playing the latest and greatest
game and the fan will ramp up, but that's the whole idea.

I know it's not what you're specifically asking, but just throwing some
suggestions up. I have plenty more pics of the project if you want but
they've not been downsized and so are large.

Martin.
PS: Mac Mini's are virtually silent as stock )

RE: [uk-vac] OT: PC cooling question - Innovative solution needed!
I fiddled with peltiers when I was at University.

Two points:

1) They're expensive.

2) IIRC, a peltier simply gets very hot on one side and very cold on the
other. Once the hot side has got hot, then what? Where does the heat go? You
still have to take the heat away, with a heatsink. So, I suppose it can help
to get as much heat as possible off the processor, but that's not really an
issue, my problem area will be getting the heat out of the water and into
the air, without a fan.

Worth mentioning though!

How about re-developing all the software you need so that it doesn't
need to be run on such a ludicrously fast processor in the first place :) .
We have all seen the wonderful things that can be done with a few Z80s and
no heatsinks ;) .

Hi,

>From my experience of modifying cars it is possible to get pipes/hoses with
a different diameter at each end if you're prepared to pay. Demon Tweeks
used to have a few parts but I found it cheaper to side step them and find
their supplier. EG: There's a company near Gatwick called 'Pirtek' that
specialises in hoses and connectors to the trade.

Alternatively a visit to numerous scrapyards and a lot of searching will
probably turn up a suitable combination (but very inefficient on time). I've
also used aquatic pipe, oxygen pipe, microbore (shower) pipe, copper
brake/fuel line, hand fabricated/welded pipes, etc....

Good luck, it will be interesting to see how the end result turns out; I
suspect if the radiator is large enough you will get away without a fan.

Karl.
