Outrun DX conversion to Turbo?

Hi all,

I've just bumped into a Turbo Outrun DX cab out in the wild, but it looks just like a normal Outrun DX (red artwork). The videos of Turbo seem to show a white cab, or a streamlined cab like Roadblasters.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a conversion kit for Outrun > Turbo Outrun, as this is what it looks like!

The US conversion for sale is of an outrun "standard" (http://outrun86.wordpress.com/1-1-outrun-arcade-machine-variations/) see which as far as I can see doesn't have much difference to the full dlx apart from the plastics around the seat.

The one you've bumped into is a full dlx. I have turbo outrun in my dlx at the moment, the boards are exactly the same, just the code that is different, so the rest of the hardware in the dlx is compatible, with the notable exception that there's no turbo button (the boards have some option to map that to the start button for conversions).

There must have been a conversion kit, makes complete sense for there to have been one, and there's also a similar looking dlx here on this (excellent) resto: http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/sega-outrun-deluxe-moving-cabinet-restoration

BTW would love a proper TOR dlx

Looks like the conversion you've found is unused (with the fire extinguishers!) are you liberating it?

<edit> just realised looks like the "standard" is smaller all round, smaller screen, smaller base.

I so recognise that, not even moved since I saw it 2009! the Metal Hawk that was next to it has gone. (THEN)

The standard has simpler movement to the deluxe, just slides left and right from memory. The deluxe rotates slightly as it moves.

Interesting. the DLX only really moves left to right, just pivots at the front, and the castors are on a ramp. Will look into the difference.

It was switched off even back then?

<edit> posts crossed!

It's exactly the same cab. That's just a conversion from OutRun.

There was also a limited edition white version of the full deluxe cabinet, which is rare but not all that sought after it would seem.

I had no idea there was a white version. Is that definitely an actual Sega release?

Had I seen that in the wild I'd have assumed it was the result of someone flexing their artist muscle and, in the process, trashing a classic cab. It probably would've made me angry too

There are lots of official OutRun cabs out there.

OutRun Cabs

- Mini/Cabaret (minor variations between US and Europe release. Some have vinyl on sides, some sprayed)
- upright

- upright (Unidesa Spanish licensed variant, white, different PCB design with ribbon cables)

- upright (LAI Australian licensed variant, red sides & other cosmetic changes)

- Standard sitdown (simpler movement than Deluxe)

- Deluxe sitdown

- Static sitdown (LAI Australian licensed variant, looks awful!)

- Static Cockpit (Japan release only)

Turbo OutRun variants (completely different cabs, not a conversion)

- Mini (redesign with speaker at the top and proper sideart)

- White Deluxe

- Static Cockpit (similar to the static Japan cockpit but different)

Probably more I've forgotten

So the white DLX is a dedicated Turbo cab? That makes more sense

Correct - although most of the time the DLX Turbos were just conversions from the normal red OutRun model with a couple of stickers applied.

Turbo OutRun was marketed as an upgrade kit for the most part. Or a downgrade kit, depending on your point of view!!

Yeah I've only ever seen the red DLX conversions which is why I was thrown by those images of a white version.

I'm in the camp that actually quite likes Turbo OutRun. The girlfriend car switch thing is quite cool (and also taught me a valuable life lesson), as are the weather effects. The boosting mechanic with the overheat recharge works well; I like being able to purchase upgrades and, come to think of it, I even like bouncing over those stupid little speed bumps...

Overall though I don't like it anywhere near as much as the original.
