I think the Arcade barn
is a perfect example of this, simple fact is
day in day out there's lots of retro enthusiasts out there, that don't
travel out of their locality much, never mind to an arcade the other side of the country a few times a week! Pinball will just add to the growing
interest in retro gaming due to universal appeal.

Some just don't want it to become reality.

Yeah, I fixed it again.

Yup, fixed again.

Negativity / reality ..... Whatever - the overwhelming opinion here appears to be that a pinball arcade serving teas and coffees isn't likely to be sustainable on coin based play alone.

You would be wrong though, I like most of you have had this idea at some point, but face reality and look at what is left of coastal arcade places, if you can't race or shoot no one seems to care anymore, you have to look at the larger picture of the youth of today, they can barely string an English sentence together, and just go with the mindnumbing banality of COD 27 & Halo 15, same with movies like FAF 7, and pretty much any part of the top 40 with 20 producers knocking out repetitive sh*te all day long, they are technology lead and getting stupider on the whole with it! Kickstarter proves this too with 'classic' titles failing to scrape near enough for a remake.

It all comes down to tables vs cabs in a cafe.
At what point is that cab/pin costing your cafe money.
Most cafe I've been in near the coast are very short of room.
Talk to some cafe owners in the area you like.
See what they think about it?

Most of us see the negatives in real world arcades due to its history.

If it's a dream then go for it you can always have a cab of the week.

Someone mentioned a seaside location as a negative.... actually I think its a positive. You have all those holiday makers out at the coast for a week, there are going to be times people just want to kill time.... so unless everyone is taking their PS3/4 Xbox/One with them then an arcade might just be the ticket.... before someone shouts phone/tablet gaming I don't think that counts as much at the seaside because you simply have so many people milling about living the dream for a week IE not being a slave to the money machine and simply enjoying their time out and about.

Just my thought.

This topic could go forever.

Quick question to people who visit seaside cafés ?

Q, would you walk to one with cabs/pinball and if yes how much time/money would you spend on said cabs with your cuppa?

If I was on my own, then yeah, I'd spend some time on cabs/pinball. But I wouldn't be. I'd be with my family - who'd be bored sh*tless after 5 mins. So about a quid. Coffee on the other hand .... Happily spring £3 on a caramel latte (5 star, natch).

HOG has the right idea. lots of events.. special nights.. films.. promotes more of a community than somewhere just to play a few games.

I wouldn't specially go to an arcade or cafe and pay £1 to play a game I've played loads.. like Street Fighter II.
I would be more inclined to go if I just paid to get in.
and I'd definitely go if there was some sort of event.

+1 on playing when busy, like old days watching player in front before he watches you play.
It's that waiting to play and trying to get most for your money ( lost on home cabs )

I think if you want to do this as a bit of a lifelong dream / nastalgia sort of thing then go for it, I wish I had the money to have that sorta thing going, but don't view it as a big turnover, do it for FUN mainly IF u can afford to possibly have deficit here and there Mame4All2014-05-08 20:56:10

I have been looking for a good place to set up.pay in basis .1 hour and a half with color hospital bands to monitor how long there in or something on the same lines. fully supervised with 4 or 5 twin shooters and 4 or 5 twin racers along with about 20 jammas left on.mortal kombat/street fighters and few left on real retro.couple of pool tables ,super chexx.garlando fussball table.I have 85% of this all ready with the addition of adding a few more.A place has just come up on the main street of my town.its a tourist town mad busy from june to september ,also there is nowere for kids to go only the next town all year round, and 1 and 2 euro a game it would cost parents a small fortune to go there.I am meeting with the owner of the property next week to see can he do me a good twist for the rent.Even the cinema has closed down last year there aint anywere for kids to go anymore loads of rainy days.and nowere to drop the kids off thats supervised. On a pay in basis it wont attract trouble makers or people just hanging around because there bored or just want to get warm and dry, teenage sweethearts that kind of clients that will close me.pay in basis should sort that out.I am a bit stressed at the moment saying will i or wont i but i do Honestly think it will work.Any thoughts on this.or can anyone persuade me not to do it.

It's all about the initial investment and obviously a decently managed business plan.
Nice little coffee shop, 1 x Space Invaders - 1 x Pac Man - 1 x Jamma 60 in 1 and a nice bright pinball in a little section with a couple of couches and free Wi-Fi decorated accordingly

That sounds nice a place were i would go but theres already about 15 coffee shops in town some are really nice that clean up,so i wont be going down that root.Would be just for the younger generation as a drop off point and the ones that come in with mum or dad.I think the tourist town i am in will do really well for the summer months and should be ok at the wkends all year round.I know its a gamble but i do have most of the gear already its carpeted and i have framed movie posters and a few bits and pieces that could make it look really nice at no real cost. All i have to worry about is rent, water rates .its a bone dry building ,no damp in good shape and with all them machines on shouldnt need much heating, just a big electricity bill.

I'll echo what James said, coin based play doesn't work nowadays. I have 3 machines in my shop, and they sit idle most days. That said, they're only there because I have nowhere else to put them at the moment, otherwise I'd have a hell of a lot more room to play with.
