Back in the early days of the arcades there was no internet, mobiles, and magazines were monthly. It was therefore a slow moving process to learn about new games.
I remember us kids achieving new levels on Pacman but unable to identify the fruits. There was one kid who came into school and said "last night |I beat the Grape level". We were all in awe at what the next level could be. "It's some kind of trifle", he said.
This, of course, was the Galaxian level. He had never seen Galaxian and thus did not know what it was.
We had some of the other fruits mis-labelled too. I presume others did the same? Here's what we thought they were:
Cherry
Strawberry
* Peach
* Tomato
Grape
Galaxian
Bell
Key
---
On a related point: How is it that routes came about? Did we all have the same routes and this spread around town and across cities?
I guess the same goes for the original Space Invaders 300pts technique. How is it we got to know about that so quickly, when there wasn't even any magazine let alone websites around at that time?
