I personally will vote for no rule. People don't read or follow the flippin' rules anyway and it's just more to have to police and enforce which will just lead to a bunch more use of the report post button.

Chaps - I've not broken any rules with the Teflon legs bulk buy have I? The cost has been calculated as best I can but obviously isn't guaranteed until the goods land and VAT/Import Taxes have been calculated by R&C. If I have, I apologise in advance.

Based on this thread and (a lot of) older discussions we're discussing it again.

It's not possible to eliminate private buying and selling - that's the nature of the community, but the state of pricing nowadays is ridiculous. Everyone is guessing what things are worth, whereas a real market determines the price level. Auction sites are no good due to the fees and impersonal nature.

What I'm thinking about is a single item/bundle per thread "offers" section, where the seller is free to sell to *whoever* they want (this is critical), but if a buyer makes an offer in thread the *buyer* is bound to honour that if the seller decides that's acceptable. Private offers and gazumping are going to happen whatever you do, but as long as buyers leave appropriate feedback against bad sellers then it polices itself.

Basically a system that encourages transparency by being a bit more rigid and visible.

Hope that makes some sort of sense - it does in my head and I've been mulling it over for quite some time.

What you're doing is great community ethics and spirit and I applaud you. You rule!

This is going under discussion in the Moderator area and it will last a couple of days. We need all Mod and Admin input.

One thing I will say, if this goes to vote and setting a price gets voted in, then this would be the ONLY rule we ever place. As all the other stuff that can get set is crazy and can never be moderated or policed properly and gets to the point of control as if we are in primary school. We don't want that, I don't want that, and I hope you all don't want that either

Surely if people won't trade with anyone who posts "offers?" then this will self-select itself out of existence? I don't recall seeing many requests for offers apart from the recent op clearance and that has to be run that way.

It often seems like a good idea to introduce a rule for something, especially when it's for something you want. But then another rule comes along, and another.

If you don't like trades with offers, don't engage in them.

I totally agree with you. I personally wouldn't like to see a rule added for this.

I hope the 'valuations' thread doesn't turn into a 'offers' section, not what it is intended for..

It will.

I Just did

- but I have this bit of kit hanging around. never used it. never will. never seen one for sale. So shove it in valuations and see if its worth anything/someone wants such a thing here, otherwise 99p ebay.

Thats why *I* will be voting for offers in the FS section!!!!

I have a bunch of stuff that I need to get rid of. I'm not going to give it away for free - well unless someone fancied collecting it - I don't have the time to package, but I'm not going to throw them in the bin either.

Ebay will *cost* me money to list them, and takes effort I don't want to expend on the general populace. I'd much rather they go to someone within the community.

Because of general bad experiences with "offers" sales I'm reluctant to list them as such.

So they sit around doing nothing.

forcefulfils op clearance stuff is an exceptional circumstance. In my experience "offers by PM" means you're going to be screwed around from the very first PM and the seller is generally a PITA to deal with. This is a generalisation and I'm aware there a plenty that are decent people, but "offers" to me is like yellow and black striping on a snake...

Cools - it's quite possible I'm missing your point here but how would that situation be changed by a rule saying fixed prices?

I don't think I've ever posted an FS with offers, unless I've set a price and also said offers if you think I'm on crack, but I still prefer that people have the option of doing so.

No prices can be irritating, but not half as irritating as a set of inflexible rules that have to be moderated.

This.

I'd like to see prices too, but it leads to too much aggro and ill feeling when people get slapped down, especially noobs.

Oh cool. I was just skim reading the thread (I should've been listening to a defect call but, meh, couldn't be bothered) and obviously misinterpreted slightly. Thanks for confirming

I'm glad I was able to encourage some constructive discussion and yes, a vote is the fairest way to resolve
smiley20.gif
My final say then...

The trading section is pretty much the only section I would say needs anything like policing or serious rules:
  • This is people's hard-earned we're talking about; it's a positive thing to see some evidence of past dealings / good listing practices before I hand over my £800 for your Out Run cab
  • Collectively, seller's reputations are at stake & buyers enthusiasm for the 'scene' is eroded - this may sound extreme - granted but hear me out. Having five times (from memory) fallen victim to being gazumped, (across more than one forum), where items were just seemingly open to whoever rocked up with a better deal / trade, I can't help but think had a price just been set and agreed on to begin with, those deals would simply just have happened. I've had my fair share of cracking deals, (and still do - I don't have enough fingers to count the decent collectors I know).....but I think it's a valid point. Shout if you disagree

Thing is dude that's just the morals of the seller. They could set a price and still get PM'd with a higher offer and still walk away. Unfortunately that's just life, you can usually tell with an 'offers' seller if they are decent or not if they bother to reply to your offer over PM, and in most instances the way they engage the forum.

Decent feedback (+/-/neutral) is what we need.
