[ukvac] Puckman
Hi all - First Post To UKVAC

I am an Arcade Collector based in Merseyside, I have
just aquired a Puckman cabinet, with game board. I
havent had chance to look at the gameboard yet, but
the cabinet looks in pretty good shape for its age. I
understand that Pacman was called Puckman in Japan and
was changed for the US release. I am unsure to wether
it is a genuine cabinet and game or wether it is a
bootleg. The cbainet has stick on veneer sides and
has the monitor positioned almost flat. The marquee
on the top is curved with the cabinet. Has anyoine
elese ever seen one of these puckmen cabinets b4? If
you had or have any pictures could you plz get in
touch? I would also like to hear of any other
collectors in the North West.

Regards
Stu

Hi Stu.

You are not the only Puck Man owner on this list! I recently got my hands on
a cocktail (table) that I'm now restoring. Marco Vos in the Netherlands also
has two puckmans. That's all you will find about them.

Small Puck Man facts for your entertainment:

Paku Paku was invented in 1979 by Iwatani and released in 1980 to the rest
of the world as Puck Man.

Licensed to Midway in 1980 they changed the name to Pac Man because Midway
thought Puck Man was to easy to change into F*ck Man. (my personal
experience with the Japanese is that they often find 'interesting' English
words without thinking about the English meaning) The name puck comes from
the shape, it looks like a hockey puck.

More than 100,000 Pac Man games sold in the US alone and more than 350,000
machines sold worldwide.

Namco sold the home-version rights (console) to Atari for 1 million dollars.
The executive who made that deal was fired later on :)

Because a lot of people thought Puck Man was a clone not many survived.

Iwatani left Namco when insulted with a 3500 dollar pay for his great
invention.

Iwatani later returned to Namco and still works there but suffers of bad
health at the moment (anyone who knows how to contact him please let me
know, I would love to send a get well card to the father of my favorite
game)

Namco has released a 100% conversion of Pac Man for the Neo Geo Pocket
colour (I bought one from Arcadeheaven and I'm a 100% satisfied customer)
