Man we went three years without a telly
Because my dad brought a new telly
And knocked it into a door lining it just went ppppppppsssssshhhhhhhhh for a second and my dad almost deflated on the spot. Like he went white like he was sick. Tension filled the air as we plugged it in.. it was dead.
I remeber my dad sayin “ no more telly for three years “. Next door had the 50p meter on there’s. But my
Dad splashed out all upfront on a
Sony no insurance cover.
Like I think we had it less than a week.

I had a black & white with the old round arials that you had to move about all over the place.

And I remeber some TVs had loads of
Tuning wheels …. Like It was an art to tune the bloody thing in..
It was a tray with a push release ,
The Tray pops forwards then I think there was a plastic tuning tool And it was like Alan Turin’s enigma machine.
No mater what if you touched it it was going to be a long time before you got a picture again!

The joys of picking a Telextext/Ceefax channel that was 500-odd and having to wait a minute for it to load up.
The strange DIN-connector that might've offered a better picture if you had half a clue what the wiring was.
The state of the TV after you held your dad's horseshoe magnet to it out of curiosity....

We used to rent out our TV from Radio Rentals when I was young as my parents couldn't afford a TV outright. I always remember being intrigued when we had the repair man round and I used to peek behind the TV to see how he was fixing it.

Yeh me too.
And I remeber his name. Raynet
And I knew where he lived.
And he he had an Ariel for C.B radio in his car. And his mum or dad or brother would call him if someone had phoned the house regarding his next Tv repair .
I was intreaged by his bag of tools and equipment. It was like a doctor coming round and the telly was sick.

Strange thing was I approached him once because he lived next to my best friend at the time ..
And the garage was open and in sight was a load of grinding wheels and it turned out
He made swords and axes. And in his bedroom window was a massive double headed axe. I collected white dwarf magazine. Turned out He made the prize axe for golden demon awards. ( for anyone who knows what I’m on about ) He drove an old Austin. He was a character. His name was
Raynard but his business was raynet.

And everybody hitting there TVs because they didn’t work

And nobody at all having a tv licence
And the pools man coming round
With his massive ledger taking money from people that didn’t have any

Imagine how fit people were when they had to get up out the chair and go turn TV channel over or volume up/down

Had me brothers B/W ferguson TV, was great playing Cauldron on C64 trying to work out which colour key was for which colour door one, Not sure why my Brother got a New Colour one and I didn't, we got 3 Philips ones from Comet when they were much smaller company, had to take 2 back and checked the 3rd one in shop which was also faulty, lovely Comet was, selling second hand repaired Electricals as new or B/C Grade stock, me dad then picked Grunding and that was okay

Me dad through the first B/W TV out the lounge window when it set on fire, thank goodness those days are gone at least, now it's just scooters, bikes and cars bursting in to flames everywhere!

I remember my Mum getting a huge Grundig TV for the lounge on the never never, it came with a "free" colour portable, which was for me to use.
The Grundig had a glass contrast filter over the front of it which made the TV look ultra posh! felt huge as a kid, probs around 25" but when no one else was using it, I'd connect up my C64 and live the life!!

My brothers 14" Grundig was the newer Monitor Style one with glass filter

Trying to think what my mates Grundig looked like, think that had glass filter too, was at least 26" used to have MTV on all time
Best feature with Grundig was the Audio, many of the big Grundig TV's had Sealed plastic boxes inside with the speakers in, only 4 or 5" speaker but with the sound quality was excellent at the time and Stereo if you had Hi-Fi VHS or Sky, even the older style ones had sealed speaker boxes, I put one in my girlfriends bedroom 26" inch and remember watching one of the Batman films on it, sounded good and the start of Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Some of the Philips/Pye Stereo ones had sealed boxes also, my 2nd Colour TV I had a Red Pye 17" with glass front, that was nice one

They say Super Sound because, they were that

looking at that now, sure that was same as my brothers, so maybe it didn't have glass, my Pye did as they had slide clips top and bottom to take glass out, very modern looking compared to many others still with speaker and controls on the right side, sure they marketed these TVs as Monitor Style
