are the repro cabs going to be something you offer to 'the public' or are you going more for the arcade-owners market?

Yes they will be available to the public, it just needs to be something where its viable to make a few (around 10) otherwise its not viable as theres a lot of setup to get these going and the internet plans are usually way off and only give you part of the picture.

Now that's a real nice setup you have. Would love to see a video of the workshop.

I've loved these old cabs since I was a kid, many moons ago, and only now getting around to getting a few cabs from Ken. Can't wait for them to be delivered, though a bit of a long wait.

Great video of the CNC machine. At the start and end the front panel lifts. Is that to select the cutter piece?

Are your MDF boards for the cabs pre-coated or just bare?

They're chipboard but a product called superpan, it has the machining characteristics of MDF (doesnt chip easy like Melamine Faced Chipboard) but has better durability than MDF, also looks the part for us!

At the moment I only have this in black both sides, I have to order the material and it ships from the factory in Spain, The next lot will be black one side and white the other but I need to basically order enough material to make 64 cabinets as black/white isnt something they produce and is a special order.

The sheet finish is a smooth satin black which looks very much like a lot of the 80's / 90's video games and isnt the horrible finish of normal MFC which looks like cheap office furniture.

If people want cheap and cheerful bare mdf from internet plans to build themselves then that is possible at a massive reduction in cost.

I see your capable of producing the Atari System 1 control panels, are you also able to do the Namco System 1 controls panels for Galaga 88, Pacmania etc?.

If so what do you charge for making these up?

Craig.

For the Atari build cabinets? If so yes, as you probably already know its not much different.

Price would be same as the system 1 which are £80+ shipping/VAT each - powdercoated in black.

I should point out that these have the correct radius on the front bend, I bought some from the states which turned out to be incorrect and look a right pig on a machine :(

Yes that's correct Craig the Namco Sys 1 (Atari Ireland made cabs)

The control panels are very similar to the Atari Sys 1 CP's but the Namco Sys 1 CP's are just over an inch less in cab width and about half inch shorter in cab depth where the curve starts.

Also you are probably aware but the curve for the Atari Sys 1 is a slight sharper curve than the Namco one so reproducing the same curve will not align with the profile of the cab sides around the CP area on the Namco cab.

Very interesting. I'de been trying to go down this path too but my homemade CNC router is kind of limited to control panels being only a metre in its longest dimension. Had some reasonable results making joysticks in wood and DiBond though. My Machine Mart press brake isn't really up to much unfortunately, not unless I wanted to make tin foil control panels.

A while back I sketched some ideas for a sit down woody cab in a Tecmo Urban style for the fifteen NOS 28" monitors I've got awaiting their day in the arcade. I'de better get back on the CAD layout then.

That's interesting, I've been trying to find something smooth with Satin Black Finish for my Crossbow Rebuild, couldn't find anything big enough or anything to finish chipboard. No plans for the cab I have though only all the parts of it from taking it apart and it falling apart, no idea on doing plans myself and not going to be anyone else that needs the cab either

Pretty much why I've had to buy it direct, no one seems to stock it.

so i don’t get my hopes up too much what sort of ballpark figure fit a repro of something like defender?

I don't really have any plans to do defender at the moment, wants to be ply and painted which will be viable at some point as I'm building a spray booth but need the screw compressor / dryer etc (which I also need to generate my own nitrogen rather than renting banks of cylinders)

For an example I made some System 1 cabinets, all wooden parts, locks, feet, tmoulding and they were around £750

Let me grab one off a machine here and take a look

This is awesome. Great work Craig. Looking forward to getting my hands on some of your control panels and cabs. I'm quite possibly after another system 1 cab at some point.

That's awesome. Are you selling the PI2DMDs? You should. I found out today that I should have access to a 3D scanner soonish, so I'll be able to turn any cab into CAD.
I work in Engineering so I'll ask our buyers to check out your site.

Cheers,

CF

This sounds great, do you think there's any chance that you could do midway cabaret control panels?(I need a Tron cabaret control panel in a custom size.) Also, midway glass clamping Z brackets.

Thanks,

Phelim.

Superb! Congrats on the new venture and love the attention to detail thing. Anyone that knows you will know that this is not just a name. I think people will pay for quality. Good luck with it and now I'm thinking of things I'd like to get made!

Impressive stuff.

What cabinets are you doing or have done Craig?

Obviously the Atari Quantum Cabinets look very good. I think I saw you were doing Atari System I cabinets. Anything else?
