Symptom: After warm up the left speaker sound output crackled with intermittent experiences of wailing akin to the 70's version of the BBC radiophonic workshop.
The loud wailing appeared at max volume irrespective of the volume pot setting making me think it was an amp issue rather than the logic board. I could have bypassed the amp at this point and tested the line out with some pc speakers, etc but looking at the schematics the circuit is basic and the pot is tied pretty much directly to the TDA 2030s. Touching said device for the left channel revealed it was rather hot compared to the TDA2030 on the right channel, touching the legs provoked more intermittent loud wailing. Solder joints didn't appear to be dry.
Fault: dead/dying TDA2030, raplaced with TDA2030A as that's what I had in stock and datasheets suggested it would probably work, sound performance appears similar. Sound restored.
