after being left a "something for you" card by royal mail today,I drove to the sorting office to collect it,only to be told it's not there as it is loaded on a van for a 2nd delivery attempt tommorow,I said but I can collect it now, only to be told that option no longer exists, they have to try and deliver it twice before you can collect from the sorting office.WTF
This is really sh!t. Creating more work for posties and stopping the customer collecting for another day.

They should stop this new policy. Attempt delivery once, if not in, leave at the sorting office. The customer can then either collect the next day or request a re-delivery.

In that case, why didn't they hold off from leaving a card until making the second attempt?! More silliness from RM.

The new card says they will try to deliver the next day. Rubbish waste of time. Dumb people coming up with these new ideas. RM should just deliver on time, not 7 days + for 2nd class and losing parcels...

I am postie, worked on Tracked.. New policy came in about 5 months ago, basically we will try and deliver your parcel twice automatically as Tracked is trying to compete with the couriers, it is not related to regular delivery postal services that ur fav postie does.
So we leave a card on the first attempt if we fail to deliver it and you can adjust your delivery to suit (when we scan the item again we get a notification to move that parcel to the callers office area). However if you do nothing and it rolls to the next day, then the parcel will be scanned and it will say 'move to callers' or go out on the van.

Problem is, its that time of year when we run out of time delivering... you may see it in the news that we are failing, we also got bonus linked to performance so the Posties are under pressure to 'do something' with your parcel.

I have to admit that Tracked on the website is hit and miss, some of it is due to PDAs losing Battery power, but I think the networks been more reliable this year then last year. Most of the tracked parcels I deliver is photographed so that is the main reason you do it. The reason why the tracked service costs about the same (if not the same) as second class regular delivery is RM attempt to phase out regular postal delivery and its back firing, last year they wanted to take on a load of Self Employed drivers but union stopped the hermes style service.

If you ever send something 'valuable' my advice would be Special Delivery as its handled in a very different way and less parcels to record, so thats the only one I use for important mainboards.

For Tracked i would use items up to about 50 quid

For regular i would use for items i could refund.... also note if u live somewhere where a postie knows u, the old servies might be more efficient

Okay so I'm copying a message I just sent to someone, but this is probably important info for anyone sending stuff outside UK. I've had 3 items bounced back to UK from Ireland in a row due to customs.

I got off the phone just earlier with someone very helpful, they fully explained the thing.

So, apparently this is becoming a major issue with stuff coming from UK to Ireland, they said its between 200 and 300 a day of the same problem.

Basically, a lot of post offices in UK are operating as franchises and aren't really "official" so to speak. People are going into them with all the information necessary for customs, but when it comes to the post office filling out information on their end, they just aren't bothering! So it gets to ireland missing nearly all information, irish customs are bouncing it all back.

As I was saying to them in irish post, that's a bit of a bloody problem! All she could suggest is that the sender has to stand over them in the post office to make sure they're filling out the information, but of course that's a big pain in the arse. So I think that's that for me getting stuff from UK going forward!

what are peoples thoughts on "tipping" post office workers, we have a great selection of workers where i live, i was thinking about popping £10 in a few cards and handing them out to our delivery people, not sure whether this is frowned upon or not though in todays age

is £10 enough?

Have a drop and go account with Royal Mail and been a huge help to mail order business. I only use tracked services which pushes the costs up for customers but is very reliable and can pass automated order details straight to buyers with ease.
As regards our home delivery via Royal Mail I have seen the daily delivery get pushed further and further back in the day to now - 4-5pm
I can see the general toll being taken on delivery workers and is sad to see.
In my experience anything below 2kg is best with a Royal Mail service however International particular US I would always use fed ex / UPS.

another royal fail today, got carded twice this week, whilst we were out at work,so took the 2nd card to the sorting office this morning to collect my parcel, only to be told they have not got it at the sorting office,I asked "where is it then,as I have been carded twice" .the guy just shrugged his shoulders and said "im no good at finding a needle in a haystack this time of year,I suggest you try and claim for a lost parcel mate",then pulled the shutter down on me,

Please spare a thought for the poor sods who deliver your trinkets. I'm one of them.
Temporary agency driver, delivering parcels on the late shift.
Ever shift is a shitshow.
Each van is filthy inside and out. Most are clapped out, poverty spec little Corsa vans. The interior is lit by a 3W bulb normally used on the inside of a fridge. You're lucky if the wing mirrors can be adjusted.
There's nothing in the back of the van in terms of racks, sacks, hoppers or bins - everything just slides about. Stuff is sometimes three layers deep. Even if you load your van in route order, you still end up diving in to try and find the parcel you need.
The twatnav is supposed to take you straight to the door, but in practice you still spend ages searching in the dark for "Flat D" or "Dunroamin".
Traipse up three dozen steps to someone's front door with a case of beer, to find they're out. Now you've got to complete the red card in the rain and lug the thing back again.
Trip over garden gnomes and step into puddles. Last night I trod in a dog turd in the dark.

I'm either
  • delivering parcels in the dark and the rain
  • drunk
  • asleep and dreaming of delivering parcels in the dark and the rain
