Direct quote from a students game project, from review of racing games.

"A bad feature of this game is the graphics as they are very poor"

This upset me deep down

The irony of it all is that this student probably spends a disproportionate amount of time playing Minecraft, and the graphics on that 'game' aren't exactly jaw dropping!

Clearly he doesn't realise just how amazing it was when it came out (and that the hardware was very powerful in its day), due to the scaling and rotating of the graphics!

This is exactly what I was talking at him about

Even more amazing is that the Sega Y board, upon which PD runs, doesn't have any tiles at all, everything you see on screen is a sprite. Tell him to try and make a game using nothing but sprites and see what he can produce!

What's funny is he needed a lot of help to produce what he did, which ain't that great to be honest. Good enough for a computing project (not judged on looks) but even so.

I keep meaning to see if I could write Power drift in my game engine, which is essentially a sprite and tile engine. Another project.

The Y board is an awesome piece of kit, still blown away by what it's doing every time i play it.
