Still Confused

The Sega Flyer says nothing about any foot control for the Original Ride-On

I will have a look at my Manual of that as see what that says, but don't remember anything in there

Apart from if you had gears, I can't imagine why you would even want anything like that

The Limited Edition is the coolest of any Hang-On, Super Hang-On is good with Turbo and Hills, also the extra Courses, The Limited even better coz it's in the original Style cab which just looks amazing

I noticed myself that there's nothing mentioned on the Hang-On flyer about the foot switches. Bit strange that.

However the KLOV page on Hang-On makes reference to the foot switches.

http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8068

QUOTE : The sit-down version lets you steer your bike by moving your weight left and right, but there are neither force feedback or mechanics in it. However, when making a turn, you can push down on the foot peg to make the bike turn faster.

OK, so my curiosity got the better of me and I reversed the Ride-On Hang-On code that handles the foot switches in-game. And whilst I don't fully understand what's going on (the foot switch handling part is only a small part of a much bigger routine that I don't have time to fully absorb right now) I can clearly see that pressing either of the foot switches causes a word value of $0258 (taken from the ROM at $010fda) to be written to the contents of sub-cpu RAM at $c7e052.

When you release the foot switch the value at $c7e052 constantly decreases by 1 every frame until it reaches zero. If you press either foot switch again it will be reseeded with $0258. This value is then used in a variety of calculations which ultimately affect the grip of the bike in a corner.

Here's a short extract from the main CPU code :-

00B574: btst #6, $e01001.l ; test FOOT SW.R

00B57C: beq $b58c ; branch if it's being pressed

00B580: btst #7, $e01001.l ; test FOOT SW.L

00B588: bne $b596 ; branch if it's NOT being pressed

00B58C: move.w $10fda.l, $c7e052.l ; move contents of $10fda ($0258) into $c7e052 if either footswitch is being pressed

00B596: tst.w $c7e052.l ; test $c7e052

I guess the interesting thing to note is that there's just a single value affected by pressing either of the foot switches. This means that you can press the left foot switch when going around a right hander (and vice-versa ; press the right foot switch when going around a left hander) and still benefit from the extra grip of pressing the foot switch! This is easy to do on a keyboard in MAME but I bet it's not so easy to do on a real Ride-On Hang-On bike!

Here it is on its arrival, on the truck the guy delivered it on

Bike has been repainted - odd that it was in bad enough shape to be considered for a refinish, then was in service long enough to get more damage!

Black portions were painted flat black, black overspray on lot a lot of bits

Lots of tape on everything!

The monitor had issues - fold over:

Large objects caused image to shrink and blur:

Darker images caused tearing and would barely display:

Someone attempted to fix this, seemingly, by breaking the focus pin housing on the neckboard and bend the pin to "make better contact"

. Was able to carefully straighten it back:

There is a flyer on Arcade Flyers that shows that same version of Super Hang-On as in your photo so it looks like it is a dedicated. Do you have any piccies of yours? Sounds like you're doing a stella job getting it back on the road.

Whoa nice find! I think I like the looks of that more than the standard "white moulded bezel" upright version

*ducks*.

That's gorgeous!

Is the board set housed in the base or the bike itself?

Thanks! A couple of my friends said I shouldn't restore it - that it looks sort of like a light cycle in its current state

The PCBs and power supply are located in a pull out drawer. Here's how it looked when I first got it:

And the PCB with the EPROM in the wrong spot causing the graphics glitch

Thanks for the pics. Looks like there's 25 years of dirt and grime on those boards!

What's the final picture supposed to be?

That's the S2VB10 rectifier that powers the audio amp - with the terminal corroded from mouse pee and a nice little turd next to it for good measure

That's a hawt machine! :)

I finally had some more time to work on this (and suppose I'll start another thread in a more appropriate place!) I sanded and polished out the plexi overlay, touched up the opaque rear of the dials where the gears had gouged into the silk screen. I found a proper switch and tidied up the wiring underneath and replaced the light bulbs and cleaned up overspray from the machine being painted previously while assembled
smiley18.gif
. I also stripped and repainted the rusty and previously repainted handlebars.

I still need to find an opaque paint pen fine enough to do the numeral details on the dials.

How it looked upon arrival:

Note the light shining through the gouges in the dials:
