Just a reminder as it was one thing I nearly forgot to do when I got carried away with the cleaning and subsequent excitement of reassembly, is not forget to apply some fresh dielectric grease for the anode cap if you have already cleaned it all off.

Hi everyone, I've been meaning to get on with my U4 project for ages, so lets do that..

I recently took all of the internal metal parts and screws to be stripped and re-plated. I took this lot to Bryony Metal Treatments in Kingswood, who were very nice to deal with. The owner seemed really interested, and explained that the iridescent gold-to-yellow finish is yellow chromate plating (or yellow zinc chromate). Which I had no idea about tbh, they colour matched everything, so there was a mix of yellow chromate, silver and black for speaker covers etc.

Almost everything came up like new, the power supply bracket (bottom left) was badly corroded and still shows some discolouration. Who cares though as the psu will be sat on it!




I still need to get the cabinet itself powder coated before I can start putting this beast back together!

They don't, which is a shame. I was corresponding with a company in Leicester who did @eccentric-nut's U4 and it looked amazing. So even though it's a drive I'm tempted to take it there. They quoted £360 and it was over a year ago, not sure if that's a good deal or not

Google Translate hallucinated that translation because it misread the worn Chinese characters as Japanese kanji. [1]
