Still Remember The First Time You Played It....

Just wondering what Arcade Game/s you thought was so awesome you still remember having that first go on it

The main standout game for me I can still remember like it was yesterday was Upright OutRun at the local Fair on the Park not far from where we lived, blown away buy it in everyway, The graphics, the music, the playability, the shaking wheel, the Choice of route. I had 2 goes after mate was on it and went right at fork, had a 2nd go going same way (Hardest) lol I didn't know but ended on 2nd stage again, was a fair few waiting to have a go with my mates and many others

Not one I ever saw in any Arcades that I remember but watching video of it being played you wouldn't forget it in 1984/85
got some low bass frequency audio too, hope the cab had decent size speakers

Hang on though for me was more of a game changer

Space invaders was the first game I played
Pacland ,nemesis,rtype ,power drift ,pole position

Yeah pacland for me ,it was doing things other games hadn’t even tried
Before super Mario ,wonderboy etc etc

Still remember being little and having a go of Sea Wolf (with a stool of course😄) arcade was surrounded by wonderful Electromechanical gems and other such wonders that i found fascinating. Then of course a couple years later Battle Zone, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Pac-Man. Didn't go away for a few years after that, then on a cheapo primary school trip from Deptford London to Butlins Minehead in freezing October 1984. The holiday park was basically shutdown, no rides etc. Nothing open apart from one big dance hall (which the DJ seemed to play Relax on a loop!) and a canteen/restaurant! On the penultimate day the teacher took us past the seafront to go to some gift shops to see if we wanted to buy some small gifts and postcards for our relatives. We past the arcades all glowing and warm on a dark grey October afternoon. A few of us pleaded to go in and he said no! Then said ok we'll go in on the way back! An hour later we where excitedly going back past the arcades and was going for the doors when Mr Saunders said 'No, we're not going in now, we've got to get back!!') I'll never forget that feeling 😭 Arcade games after that were 1941, Iron Horse, Jailbreak which were in 2 different local cafés and a chip shop. At secondary school we had a selection of local businesses that had cabs up and running through the years of dinner breaks or walking home. From Gradius, Wonderboy, Commando, Bubble Bobble then later Double Dragon, Shinobi, Salamander, R-Type, Rainbow Islands etc. Being a poor kid i usually could only have one go on a given day. But was a blast watching other people play anyway.

I'd have to say Wonderboy as well. There was a cabinet in the local swimming baths that I always wanted a go on and sometimes got a chance if I pestered enough for 20p, only to lose in a matter of seconds.

I also can't walk past a Chase HQ without having a go.

Me too. I can remember where i saw every game for the first time. One of the good ones near our secondary school in bermondsey was a really large independent video rental shop that always 3 cabs up and running that would get different games every 6 weeks or so. Then late very late 80s there was a local chip shop that opened up a downstairs room with about 5 cabs running. That's the first place i can remember seeing R-Type 2 and Double Dragon 2 etc. I used to zig zag on the way home from school looking what arcade games local takeaways, videoshops, cab offices were still running and of course the excitement of a new game on the premises.

I think for me, my earliest arcade games were Dig Dug in a local pub/restaurant my parents would frequent and the cockpit version of Star Wars at the local bowling alley. This would have been around 1984'ish, so I would have been around 5 at the time. Still remember it though! Gaming in general , though would have been Christmas of 1983 when my uncle gifted me his old 2600 and his game collection - he moved on to the Intellevision at that point...not a bad hand-me-down, if you ask me!

I can’t recall if it was hang on or super hang on… but it was on the full size bike. I was tiny so I could barely move it with my weight, but I loved it!

Other than that, I remember playing The Lost World DX (light gun game) at SegaWorld when that was a thing. It was big special edition with pneumatics moving the seat around. The aim was so off I pressed the emergency stop button to complain 😅 they did nothing to fix it…!

It just looked miles ahead of anything I'd ever seen (even Ridge Racer).
edit: wasn't keen on the singing though... still not now.

The first arcade games I remember playing regularly were Peter Packrat, Assault and Rolling Thunder as they were sat next to each other in the first arcade you got to in Whitley Bay.

It just looked miles ahead of anything I'd ever seen (even Ridge Racer).

Aahh yes Rolling Thunder. They had that in a little arcade in the late 80s on Sheerness.

I think “outrun” was the first driver I actually felt I was in the car in spite of standing with one foot on throttle ….I didn’t own one for ages due to cost but played it on M6 services at knutsford when I engineered part time for associated leisure…great way to spend winter days when seaside seasonal arcades closed.. There have been lots of good drivers in my opinion…

** The one game stands out in my memory is “Hunchback”… took delivery mid afternoon and wife and I played it till 4am next day by which time we clocked over 1400 metered units £140 worth! The meter read about 660 when it was bought ex showroom demo from hazelgrove music ltd it passed 2000 by next morning……

It took about 6 hours nearly midnight before I got on the rope swing first screen, I would have spent over £50 if I didn’t have the keys for sure just to achieve that…

Then the following levels were a bit less stressful until the level where random arrows come in behind as you also jump to clear castle battlements, maybe with soldiers spiking you from below on each jump too (screen 4 if I recall?) so frustrating if you stand you get an arrow in the arse .. if you run and jump you get an arrow back of your head …. Ouch either way life lost..

Went to bed dreaming about falling in the pit missing the rope… it took so long to realise reverse back to edge of screen and run fast to leap at the rope .. still needed expert timing but once succeeded I enjoyed the game and once sited it made a lot of money … I had about 4 or more of them in the end….

We similarly got quite addicted to “missile command” …….. playing into the night!

Early memories for painful reasons …. Perfecting Midway Space Invaders I regularly got right/left button finger’s repetitive strain injury …. Then Pac-Man gave me a joystick blister on the side of my middle finger trying to turn the corners in close chase…..

Must have been double dragon around 88' I would have been 7, think I was on holiday in Yarmouth. I'm sure a year later Final Fight was released, remember playing it downstairs in the Dunes pub in Skeggy.

Yes, Double Dragon is special. The first time i was introduced to it was lunchtime in secondary school. A local video shop had it. I heard it before i saw it, a bunch of school kids huddled around this new game. When i finally saw the screen being played and that awesome soundtrack, graphics and sound effects. Wow, i was blown away. It was definitely a step up in arcade gaming. So playable and you definitely get your monies worth from a 20p go back then (Especially if you master the elbow 😄)
I still play it and enjoy it like crazy, yes even with the slowdown which i think adds to the game.
