Strider (Arcade) Query

I've been playing a lot of Strider recently on the Capcom Stadium collection for the Xbox. I'm trying to be able to beat the game on one credit.

One abnormality that I've noticed and can't find any info about online is on the second level. When you are riding the airships at the end of the level there are two bombs that periodically drop during this sequence. Recently when I start doing this section though five bombs drop at once. Which is hard to dodge. If I die at this stage I restart at the beginning of this sequence but only two bombs drop from then on.

Does anyone know what triggers this?

The bombs drop 1 maybe 2 at a time, Strider is a funky game at best, occasionally you get one that cannot be dogged, but it knocks you off the platforms but leaves you hanging on. I have the SC for the Switch so I'll check it out this Xmas
