Had my first visit to the Retro Collective on Saturday - highly recommended - and after playing Daimakaimura on the Super Grafx it struck me that with today's huge software hacking/modding (whatever it's called! :LOL: ) community it must be reasonably easy to mod it to run on a regular PCE? Especially given the huge love for both game and system. Anyone know anything about this? I'd love to own and play it on a modern repro HuCard on my Core Grafx.

That info sheet pretty much explains why it's not possible. A cutdown version could be done, no doubt, but you can't hope to play the Super Grafx version on the regular PC Engine, any more than you can play SNES games on a NES. Lol

Yes, with machines that are so heavily hardware-accelerated, for video alone (never mind less CPU and RAM capability), you'd literally have to lose onscreen sprites and background layers, available tiles..... you can't tweak the CPU code to make it happen with much less hardware. Presumably it'd be just like creating a significantly weaker port from scratch.
The Super Grafx version does look excellent - even better graphics than the Megadrive version, just a bit lower-res than the arcade machine.

Searched for this last night and that ‘woooohhh, size of that!’ SFII Hucard was a big lump just for the sake of it according to someone who opened one up with nothing much more inside….

I thought it was an amazing conversion and the sound put the SFC version to shame for sure.

Not giving up on this though, seeing what (naively it seems to old me) ‘kids’ in their bedrooms are doing with the 80’s 16 bit Japan systems let alone the humble ZX81 it can’t be ’that’ difficult to reprogram and optimise G & G for the PCE to equal the Supergrafx and better the MD in 2025 can it? :giggle:

Its same as hucard i have with 2 games on it, its bank switched, has a white covering over the chip part ( which you can clip off ) here you go. i posted in another post but you can make out the covering.

Coolest console ever in my opinion due to it's looks and the fact there were only ever 5 games made for it.

Yep, the MD version plays perfectly but it's missing a ton of detail in the backgrounds that seemed to be present int he SG version.

Despite confusing me as a PC owning kid at the time, the PC Engine was an incredible piece of kit, considering it came out in 1987.
You'd have paid through the nose for it though. Not exact X68000 price, but I recall it was a fortune to import.

Why the hell they repackaged it into an air-filled monster of a case for the US, I'll never know.

While on the SG subject, here are some scans from Onn Lee fanzines I bought BITD. The excitement back then when this dropped through the letterbox was something else. Import gaming in the early days.

how on this earth did you play it with 2 buttons, i thought the Super Nintendo was basically the perfect platform for the game due to its button layout

Actually it was 3 buttons, run was light I think and you would toggle with the 4th button... but I played super famicom and pc engine with joy sticks, I tried fighting games with a pad but it just seems clunky to me.

It just felt amazing to play Street Fighter 2 on the tiny PC engine.
