I think I've found the next game I want to buy

How stupidly rare is this going to be, and how crappy is the Sega Vector hardware? Just want a heads-up on what I'll be getting myself into before I get really hooked on it.

Rav had one. Sold Ordyne my kit. RARE game.

I know of one I can get in the UK if you want it.

The monitor hardware for it is crap and has the potential to catch fire. The PCB hardware is the same system as Astro Blaster et. al. though so apart from needing -12v it's fine. And this is the one I was referring to when I mentioned that running it off -5v would kill the RAMs.

In fact, PCB wise, it uses a cage setup like Gorf and MOST of the PCBs are shared, just not quite all.

Adebov - I think I'll give the 2600 version a miss

.

Oll - I was going to steal Ordy's when I went to drop him off some ROMs. Might be in touch at some point about the one you know of.

Chappy - fire it up in MAME. It's good!

I nearly bought that one off of Rav when he was getting rid. Lack of interest in the hobby at the time prevented me which is a shame as it's a superb game.

Eww, cages? I've so far avoided owning anything that tricky to work on. CPS1 is about as awkward as I've had to deal with so far.

As for fire, I guess I've been too lucky with my SWC's only fault being a duff AVG in the 4 years I've owned it so no doubt if I get one it'll spontaneously combust and take my Star Wars with it!

The cage isn't a problem on these. The backplane is symmetrical so to work on them you just remove all the boards, unscrew the backplane from the cage and then just make up a bunch of wooden separators to ensure you don't short anything out. Bung the board you need to work on the top and voila!

I fixed a few G80 sets for Ordy before we moved house as it goes (jeebus, that makes it 6+ years ago!!!) pain in the arse hardware wise because I'd get a set working and then by the time I'd fixed one fault another would appear and so on, but got there in the end. I think there's a load of interrupts between the boards as well...

All good fun, you'd lap it up

[EDIT] I've got a bunch of notes somewhere. And the Astro Blaster set I kept as payment is still up in the loft propping our TV arial up at the right angle

Bah, the GO8 isn't as bad as people make out! I've had more problems with the boards than the monitors!

As The People's Favourite Monitor Repair boy (tm) from 1979 to 2006 I'd kind of expect that really. Plus I've seen your pipe soldering gun that you use on PCBs so, yeah makes sense

Have to say, vector stuff is f**king cool. I was never that taken with it when I first started out in this lark, but actually, it's some of the most endearing stuff I have now. Aside from Gorf. Gorf kicks arse!

My favourite games are all vectors too. Nothing else looks quite like them.

And thanks to Ordy I now have a hankering for a Star Castle, even though I'm yet to kill a single ship!

If you have a really nice warm place in your pad you can borrow my Star Castle. Works and the picture is GORGEOUS. However it pops the fuses after a minute or so (push to reset fuses so easy to reset), apparently both Caps on the Power brick need changing to fix this.

Let me know!

Doh. I knew it had two words and began with S so I filtered the vector games. Will try Space Fury now. Definitely not Space Furry?
