[ukvac] Tech help for Out Run board
Hi all,

Not a new member, despite the 'new' alias - just got fed up trying to
convert my old eGroups account (was garysmith@......). Right, to bed
with the re-intro's - now onto the question.....

I've been having trouble with my Out Run board for ages now, did have
a black road/backdrop. Now I've got this right (by replacing the
video board) I've got another. I think its a video board/IC prob,
but I'm no techie and I need to speak to someone who is (or at least
familiar with the Out Run board)!

I'm getting random horizontal lines running through the screen
(blacks, greens, whites etc). They run all the way through the
screen, but not through vehicles, scenery or the Out Run banner that
appears on demo mode. Could it be a problem with one of the IC's on
the video board? If so, which one(s)??

Any pointers would be great...

Cheers,
Gaz

RE: [ukvac] Tech help for Out Run board
Hi Gaz,

I had an OutRun board with simmilar problems. Check the voltage on the 5v
rails as OutRun draws a lot of current which may over load your power
supply. If the voltage is below 4.5v it may give you the symptoms you are
describing.

Hope this helps.

Jonathan

Thanks for the tip...
...just checked the +5v output from the sw regulator, and on my multi-
meter it was reading 4.8v. Should it be reading more than 5v? The
spare +12 output was reading 13.58v. Sorry for the idiot questions,
but my knowledge of electronics is about as good as my Japanese (not
too good!).

Oh and a further development tonight - for the first time the game
keeps resetting itself. There seems to be power getting to the PCB
coz the LED remains lit - maybe a bad connection somewhere? Maybe
its linked to the screen problem??

How did you fix the problem with your board?

Help! Help! Help!
Gaz

I think the 12v is only used for the sound amps so shouldn't affect the
graphics. Did you read 4.8v at the power supply end or the board. If your
wires are too thin then they will act like a resistor effectively recucing
the voltage getting to the board. There are two solutions to this:
1. replace the 5v and GND wires with thicker ones
2. tweak the pot on the power supply until the board voltage = 5v

One word of warning if you tweak the voatage for the outrun board you may
find that other boards running off the same power supply now have too much
voltage.

Could be linked to the above problem.

See points 1 & 2 above.

Hope this helps.

My outrun kept resetting, I re-did the solder joints where the power
connects to the main game board, and now its fine.

Thanks guys! I'll give 'em a try and see how I get on - shouldn't be
a problem tweaking the pot, the Out Run board is the only one I have!

(by the way, have you noticed the amazing 'prancing horse' on the
back of the car? It cleverly faces different ways when you turn the
car left and right! All part of the charm, eh?!)

Cheers,
Gaz

Tweaked the pot and have now got around 5.1/5.2v at the board end
(the psu is outputting about 5.7/5.8v so maybe I should replace the
wires anyway?)

This seems to have solved the reseting problem ) but the horizontal
lines haven't gone. In fact they've turned into thicker lines and
seem to flash and change colour ( Is 5.1/5.2v too much? (even for
the power-hungry Out Run board!) I don't want to turn up the heat
anymore if I'm going to fry the board!!

Maybe I've solved the power supply problems and need to look
elsewhere? A dodgy rom maybe??

Again, any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary
