Hi,

I've just bought a small pile of old boards (mostly Namco). I also need some help to identify what I've got - but that's another email.

I now have a number of Galaxian boards but there are two pinouts on Wiretap - one being a DC conversion. Bearing in mind I'm using a standard arcade PSU with no -12V, which one should I use?

Any help appreciated,

Cheers,

RobH

From my limited knowledge of namco galaxians...

The pinouts you're referring to mention conversion of Midway galaxians from AC to DC,

given that my Namco board doesn't even have half of the components that the conversion

talks about and since *my* board doesn't show any particular signs of conversion I

would guess that the Namco board is +12v only. The pinouts appear to be the same in

all other respects.

A safer alternative is, given that +/- 12v would only be used for sound, to ignore the line

completely until you've identified the working/non-working boards.

Given that this is all purely conjecture on my part, I'd check with deja.com for any rgvac

threads on the subject before commiting iron to flux.

Cheers

I have 2 midway galaxians boards, i've seen a proper namco version of
galaxians, and as far as i could tell from just looking at it, they are
basically the same. Chris, are you sure that the namco board you have isn't
a bootleg?

If you're looking to wire one up, and not sure whether it's AC or DC, check
for the following on the board:

indications that DC conversion has been done:
- big heat sink is missing, other large-ish components de-soldered, at the
edge connector end of the board.
- Check for 2 large diodes if they've been shorted together, and possibly
bypassed the entire onboard AC conversion stage (includes large ceramic
resistor, transistor on heat sink, big fat capacitors etc..)

basically that's about it.

This may sound like a stupid question but I don't own any Namco boards. Is it common for boards made by Namco to have no markings, i.e. They don't have Namco written on them anywhere ?, Or have the boards that I have seen all been bootlegs ?.

I have recently got hold of a Galaxian bootleg and it isn't either of the
pinouts that are one wiretap. I can mail them to you if you want.
(it is dc converted)

dunno..

Of all the boards i've owned, only the early namco boards actually have
'NAMCO' etched into the copper, the later games on System 1 / System 2 and
beyond aren't marked, with a few exceptions, i believe Final lap has great
big NAMCO white writing on a daughtercard on the bottom.

oh yeah, Pacland (1984) has no obvious namco markings...

I do believe that i've seen the NAMCO logo etched into the copper on
galaxians boards..

I have Tank Battalion from 1980, it took me a while to find it, but it too
has NAMCO etched into the copper, at first i thought it was a bootleg
because of a lack of obvious markings.

seeya!

You're right you know, now you point it out it's all beginning to come
clear...

The reason why mine isn't particularly obvious is that the components have
been physically removed from the board - rather neatly too!

As to how you can tell whether it's a bootleg or not, the only markings I
can find
on the board (apart from a big white sticker saying "Galaxians Namco OK") is
the singularly unhelpful "bd1 side1" etc on each of the boards.

I've have a xevious, bosconian, gaplus, and mappy board. All original
all namco and no namco logo on any of them.

My midway galaxian has midway etched on it though.
