yep, that's a 16L88 PAL. (programmable array logic - i think it stands for)

easy to find, but they are programmable logic :) so you can get a new one,
just need to burn it with the correct code. Unfortuantely... you can't read
the 'code' off the old ones as such.. they are one-time programmable, then
they act like any other logic chip....

try putting a 74ls157 in you programmer and try to 'read' it ;) that's the
problem.

if you have a bad one, or one that's missing, you need to find exactly the
same boardset with a good working one then reverse engineer it :) easy peasy
:) you'll need a 16-20 input logic analyser and knowledge of how the fuck to
use it in order to work out how the PAL works, then write your own code to
program another PAL to mimmick it precisely :) so you'll need a pal
programmer and knowledge of the language used, and a compiler too:)

its not straightforward, that's why they are used on a lot of boards for
decryption/security... once programmed, they're basically like a custom
chip..

good luck :)

maybe if you tell us what the chip is from, and the problem you have with it
then maybe someone else on here has already reverse-engineered it.. there is
one particular person that i know who has successfully done it :)

of course if i had opened up the book on the shelf i could tell you (rather
insignificantly) the following:

number of array inputs = 16
output configuration designator = Active Low
number of outputs in the designated configuration = 8 (not too sure about
this one)
performance designator = rating 8? high speed? (not too sure about this one
either ;)
temperature range= commercial (0-70 degrees C)
package type = N 20-pin plastic dip

of course, i don't think that's really going to help, it just sounds whizz
:)

Re: [ukvac] tech: Identify
That explains it fully thanks, I had taken the chips out of the pcb for what
ever particular reason and upon replacing them the pcb no longer functioned
just a blank screen, So I was under the impression that one of the IC was
faulty, but by playing musical chairs (DILS) and swapping the IC's around
the pcb would function.

The pcb itself has a colour fault no red which I have traced to a transistor
2SC945 does that sound right ?
