[ukvac] Tech: Major Havoc spinner problems
Hi,
I've just finished wiring up Major Havoc to play in my Gravitar
cabinet. Despite a terrifying moment where I realised that the Gravitar
pinouts I had were wrong and I was doing something to the ARII board
that resulted in acrid smoke and an ominous glow, it's all gone smoothly
and I have MH looking and sounding great in the Gravitar cab.
Except, I can't play the thing. All the buttons work fine but the
spinner isn't doing a thing. I've checked the voltages, and I have the
+5V going fine to the coupler PCB. The coupler itself is fine, as I
checked it out in my Tempest. According to the MH Main Wiring Diagram,
I have the DIR1 and CLK1 wired correctly to pins 4 and 1 respectively on
the coupler PCB.
Out of curiosity, I reversed the DIR1 and CLK1 wires. This resulted in
the Roller Control position display in self-test alternating between 00
and FF when I moved the spinner in either direction. During the game
this meant I could move left very slowly by moving the spinner either
left or right. I've not had to diagnose encoder wheel problems before,
so I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Any ideas?
BTW, there are no errors displayed in self-test.
Thanks in advance
Ian
