[ukvac] Tech - More Salamander
I also have a faulty Salamander - the watchdog keeps reseting the cpu.
I have tried upping the voltage to 5.25 measured on the cpu but no
difference :-(

I have cleaned all the pins on socketed ic's as well.

Another Konami board Combat School does exactly the same.

Any ideas were to go next ?

the boards might not use it, but you never know..

The old retro CEX (computer exchange) in london had a homemade supergun,
which lacked -5v.

I used to take boards down there to sell, fully working, 100% boards, plug
them in, then get abuse off this one guy who had his head up his ass and
claimed 'well, all these other games work fine, its your board mate' which
kinda pisses you off.

After getting really annoyed with him on several trips to london, i demanded
to see his supergun, after taking mine along with me. After all that
fussing, his supergun had no -5v. therefore, the games that raan fine
without -5v were in his shop working fine, but half of the boards i used to
take down needed it.

Anyhow, after showing my games working on my test rig, he finally conceeded.

so.... check the -5v?

So you just get a black screen and a click from the speaker every 1/2
second or so?

Thats what happens on mine. I was going to change the large black konami
part next to the amplifier as it is this part that generates the reset. I
haven't had time to look at it yet to see if this works.

Before I do this I would be interested to know if anyone disagrees with this
replacement being the cause?

From what I have learned from a friend many of the Konami boards developed
this or a similar problem due to broken or partly broken printed circuits as
well as cold solder points.
This to me is frustrating as these faults are extremely difficult to trace

From what people are saying then maybe I should check continuity between the
konami chip and the 68000 then before replacing the konami chip.

Does anyone know what is inside the konami package? I can't remember its
number but it is the one with a single row of about 10pins and it usually sits

right next to the power amp.

Is it the top or bottom board thats bad?
Maybe we can make a working one between us if your bottom board is OK.

Is there a manual for Nemesis/Salamander on the web anywhere or can someone
make a copy of one for me/us?

Hmmm not the same as the fault on mine ... here it runs and plays, just has
no sprites apart from the background/maze so you have to play blind. It
works fine when using a Nemesis bottom board.

Has anyone else seen this?
Wanna sell me a non working Salamander thats got its top board duff?

In many systems it's possible to bypass the watchdog to run tests on a
system. That way you can test the operation of the circuit and might
even get a video clue as to what's gone wrong.

Ivan,

If the 68K can't execute good code for any reason then the watchdog will
continually reset it. Hence the periodic click (sound CPU reset) and if
you look at the 68K reset line with a meter you will see it pulse up and
down.

It's unlikely the watchdog circuit is faulty. I'd look for something
wrong close to the CPU (ROM, RAM, bus lines, control lines, etc)

"dead" faults like this are really hard to diagnose without some good
kit.

Ivan,

If Chris H. is going to the meet, you could ask him to the bring the
Fluke in-circuit tester he has. I think he took a 68K pod with it.

One pin of the watchdog custom leads to a resistor and an "empty" pad.
One end of the resistor connects to +5v. If you hook a fly lead from the
*NONE 5V* end to ground with a fly lead, you'll turn off the watchdog
circuit. You'll be better able to see whats going on then.

The reset problem on my Salamander is the top board. I have swapped the bottom
board with my working nemesis and the bottom board seems fine.
