Another easy fix this one.
I watched this board being pulled out from a pcb bin and donated to me for the x68000 which I needed at the time.
After verifying that the X68000 CPU, that I thought was faulty, was in fact fine, I decided to test the game to see if it was working.
Plugging it in I initially got a ROM error which I quickly fixed by re-burning the Main CPU rom at U37.
The game now booted but had graphics glitches, specifically, the sprites corruption and body parts falling of players.
As you can see above, the goalie left his butt on the ground with this goal kick!
Normally games like these are not worth the time or money to repair as you could pick up a working copy for £20 or so. I had planned to strip it for parts but it kept on giving me that puppy eyed look like dogs at Battersea dogs home.
As much as I wanted to, I couldn't do it so I decided to give it a chance. So first point of call was to give the PCB a nice clean. It was spider infested and I had wasted 20 minutes trying to catch one that was hiding under a 74LS. Yes I am afraid of spiders.
Checking mame romset, I figured that U48, U17, U20, U13, and U14 were in charge of graphics. Pulling each masked rom to verify roms reviled that U11 was faulty.
Burnt new rom at U11. Mask ROM was HN624116P equivalent to a M27C160 which I had a few laying around. Initially I had tried a 27C800 but it only had half the memory space and wouldn't work properly.
Plugged it back in and all the graphics glitches are now gone.
I am now glad I didn't strip it for parts. It's quite a fun. A bit like Football Champ. And after the clean it looks brand new.
