In mame I noticed in astro blaster the speech is in .wav format.... that means its not synthesized?

No it's definitely synthesised, probably sampled for mame by recording directly from the sound card.

Century CVS games are the best for synthesised speech, they even have a British-English slant to them...

Are they better than the sinclair spectrum attempts at speech ?

er yes, they use a TMS5100 speech synth chip, one of the most convincing..

Spectrum? pffft. Are you insinuating that the UK can't produce anything decent with regards to speech? thats why i said try them in mame! you'll see.

I had a Currah (spelling?) Speech add on for the spectrum. It was rubbish, but hilarious making it say swearz.

As far as home computers go the TI99/4a had the best speech synth ......shame the operating system was so sh*te

Wasn't Currah SPO256 based? I remember it being poor, yes
