Probably should of done this before now

Just last night, once again I was measuring the games room while I was down there looking at a machines wiring

have such a nightmare keep trying to sort out what machines I can keep and if I need to sell any cabs, if I just had all upright machines I'd have no problem at all but with loads of sitdown machines that causes problems

Currently have 24 upright video games, also 2 pushers, crane, emulation pinball 32", pirate bandit, penny bowl, trolls, 5 Glendale machines and then 11 sitdown cabs which are all big

When building the games room, I never looked at what I can fit in as I never meant to get so many machines, that room was suppose to be my workshop with a few extra machines

so I just built it to the max size you could without planning, 5m x 6m but I wasn't sure if that was inside or outside measurements, it did end up a little bigger when my brother dug the wrong side of the line so it's 6m x 5.25m, so I measured the inside last night which is 5.40m x 4.70m as I did cavity walls which I recommend if you want heating bills cheaper.

So then when you look at what machines you can fit in, there are different ways to get the most machines in the same space.

at the moment the place is rammed full, there are about 17 uprights in there, but also Glendale chicken, penny bowl, trolls vending type, rail chase, hang-on, chase hq and conti circus sitdown

along the shorter wall at back I have 7 cabs, afterburner, kung fu master, double dragon, 2 goliath, mad dog, goliath.

Other side, Indy Jones, Toobin, 720, Champ sprint, Dragons Lair, doorway and number 6 Buggyboy

if I just filled it with uprights, I can then fit in another 2 rows of cabs the same way back to back in the middle, so that's another 10, which makes 23, have to leave a gap for walk way, then the other side like buggy boy another 2 against end wall so that's 25 total, which leaves you plenty of space to move cabs about if any go wrong.

If I packed them in tighter, and go the other way I can fit 8 on each end wall that measures 5.40m, so that's 16 already, but a smaller depth machine would have to go near the doorway, because I never thought about how far the doorway should be from the edge wall, it's about the width of a cab 25", but not the depth as most average are 34"

If I fit them that way, I can then squeeze in with say 2ft between across the other wall 4.70m one and fit 4 more in, then have another 2 rows of 4 back to back, so 16 + 4 + 8 + say another 2 on the end wall so space to walk, because most are just over 25" wide but odd ones are 27"/28" like mad dog and 720, then Ninja Warriors at 35" so that's 30 cabs that way, but that won't leave much space to move any if they go wrong

So if it was built 2ft bigger one way, it would mean I could fit in 30+ with ease and if it was another 2ft the other way it would add another probably 4 or more

Or the other way is having 2 rows of the cabs like they are already, then I fit in basically 4 of the big sega sitdown machines each end the other way, but again abit of a squeeze so just that bit bigger would again make all the difference.

So if your planning on building a games room, measure up cabs to make sure you can get the most in for the space, because if you did it a half a foot less one way on mine, it would make the difference of 4 cabs less and leave you with space between them so one way round it would be only 20 cabs instead of easy getting in 24 for a few inches less and plan the door way so you can get a cab in the corner at the side or if the door in middle, make sure it ends up in the side of a machine and not in the middle of it so another machine less

My other issue is, I have space in the house extension as well, so if all uprights I could easy fit in 25 in games room, the side extension I can get 17 cabs along the wall, 4 more machines in old kitchen, and then dot a few about in corners, so 50 cabs no problem, but the side extension being about 6.5ft wide, the uprights need to go along that wall, because the big sitdown stuff won't fit, which is a shame because all my uprights would go down the games room building but the big stuff needs to go in there.

It's the F355 that causes the biggest problems, there ain't many places that will fit and just worry it will ruin the games room look, which again comes back to the issue of the games room could do with being another 2ft deeper to fit them in easier.

Then the other problem is if you have a fault with that or rail chase, you don't want to have to keep moving the whole machine to get to the back of them

So a lot of planning on the buildings measuring to allow the most in for the space is something I wish I'd done now.

You need to make some space. Send me your After Burner and 720 and any sit down driver I really don't mind helping

Biggest tip I can give is to virtually plan your games room layout using Sketchup. There are free models available for most golden era cabs or at least of cabs that are the same dimensions. If there isn't a model you can take the closest to it and changes it's dimensions to match exactly. Much easier to move them around on screen, and after you're done you can walk around in virtual 3D which in my experience was extremely accurate.

The DLX cabs really are space killers. My OutRun 2 takes up around a quarter of my space, because it's not just the footprint of the cab, you have to remember to leave space to actually get in to it, and also be able to move it if you need to access the internals. I could probably fit 6 uprights in place of that.

Before I started putting cabs in their places this time I measured all of them and drew up a plan in photoshop that was to scale, then was able to try different layouts easily. It made life a lot easier when pysically moving the lot in to place that's for sure.

Now if I'm getting a new cab I look up the dimensions and add it to the plan so I can see if it will slot straight in or if it needs to swap places with something else.

This was an early one that I thought would work but wasted loads of space and meant it wasn't actually possible to get in a couple of cabs without moving stuff. Might well be worth you doing something similar, even just cut out bits of graph paper or something and lay them out to see.

That's what I need to do guys, whats the easiest programme to do it though

F355 is going to be the nightmare, I could really do with doing a small extenstion off the side of the games room just to fit that in a corner out the way

I have the proper old arcade carpet to put down, some cool neon tubes, change signs etc, some pink panther signs, one from the arcade In Blackburn

That may well be my easiest way, using paper cut to scale

will have to work on it to see what I can fit in
