[ukvac] Turbo Outrun for MAME
I'm told that the ROMS for Turbo Outrun aren't available for MAME on
account of suicide batteries & encryption - is this true or is my
mate talking shite......

Re: [ukvac] Turbo Outrun for MAME
Turbo Outrun uses encrypted processors, hence no
emulation at this point.
This is pretty much the same situation with a lot
of (for example) Data East games that use custom
encrypted processors e.g. Fighters History.
The ROMs are dumpable of course, but MAME doesn't
emulate them because the CPU emulation isn't up
to scratch.
Don't forget that MAME has a fair few incomplete
drivers commented out in it's source, you can
always find out by poking around in it.
Generally, the way to check if a game is
officially emulated by MAME is to look at mame.dk
which has all the ROMs available for download.

Cheers, Justin.

This is true, one of the 68000 CPUs on my Turbo OutRun board
is the big chunky battery backed version that is usually found
on other Sega games of that vintage. The original OutRun board
is identical, but without the encrypted CPU. All it would take
is for someone to work out the encryption scheme.

Alternatively I believe that there is a version of Turbo OutRun
that runs on the 'Beta' bootleg boards (I have a number of these
boards with original OutRun on). I missed out on buying one of
these boards about a year ago when I was looking for an original
board, but if another one comes up then I'll get hold of it and
dump the roms for MAME.

Dave.
