Just finished the Story of U.S.Gold by Chris Wilkins and Roger M. Kean. Brought back some memories - the logo and that of Ocean being firmly rooted in my brain.

Not entirely sure why, but I found it slightly depressing reading about how the company grew from its humble beginnings to an international operation. The bottom line was profit, with games just seen as another commodity market. At the end, the founder, Geoff Brown, is quoted as saying, “I thought, let’s sell it, sell it and make even more money.”

I know the games I’ve enjoyed over the years wouldn’t have been made without people like this. Perhaps I’m just a bit disappointed in the book showing the reality of the games industry, rather than focussing more on the games development? Anyone else left feeling a bit cold after reading it?

Not read the book but remember them back in the day when they commonly worked with Creative Materials to make some ropey home conversions but it what we had at the time so I still have nostalgia for them.

I've got the Ocean book though signed up.

I work with a guy who was a coder at Ocean. Love listening to the titles he worked on. So many fond memories as a kid playing Amiga and various other format games.

Yes many of my Amiga memories contain that iconic Ocean logo. Naively thought it was a US company :)
