Just finished the Story of U.S.Gold by Chris Wilkins and Roger M. Kean. Brought back some memories - the logo and that of Ocean being firmly rooted in my brain.
Not entirely sure why, but I found it slightly depressing reading about how the company grew from its humble beginnings to an international operation. The bottom line was profit, with games just seen as another commodity market. At the end, the founder, Geoff Brown, is quoted as saying, “I thought, let’s sell it, sell it and make even more money.”
I know the games I’ve enjoyed over the years wouldn’t have been made without people like this. Perhaps I’m just a bit disappointed in the book showing the reality of the games industry, rather than focussing more on the games development? Anyone else left feeling a bit cold after reading it?
